#11 Boone & Crocket Roosevelt Elk
« on: March 02, 2015, 12:50:03 PM »
Hey guys,

I was talking with my father in law this last weekend about how much taxidermy is worth.  He has the #11 boone and crocket roosevelt elk.  What do you think something like that is worth?

It'd be priceless if it were mine.

Can't understand why you would sell it?
My biggest fear is when I die, my wife will sell all my guns for what I said they cost me!     ;)

A lot of you guys are probably wondering why you would sell it.  But how many people have houses that big to fit it?

People that buy other peoples taxi mounts do it for decoration and not because of its score. I've seen good mounts sell for a few hundred bucks at best.  And like others said, why sell. Its priceless to the hunter that got it.  It not just a mount, its memories. At least for me.

Don't tell my wife but I designed our house for that reason, 28' vaulted ceilings in great room and 10 ceilings in basement.. :chuckle:

Maybe he's moving into a house that doesn't have room for an elk head? Maybe he's just wanting to know value for when he's gone? Lots of reasons. It's a good question. What do you do with mounts that are no longer wanted or that you just don't have room for?

He might want to contact interior decorators.  Elk heads, deer heads, bear rugs are popular for woods lodges and rustic restaurants.

If I could get enough money to go on my next adventure I would sell one of my mounts.

I'm hoping someone can answer the question so I can tell my wife how much she can sell my mount for when I kick the bucket.  Otherwise I'm pretty sure she'll just take it to the dump. :dunno:

I would bet it would be closer to 8k or 10k. I got offered 5K 6 years ago for a Muledeer my dad shot in 1956. Scores 263 3/8. Cabelas, Bass Pro and traveling horn collections like you see at sport shows all buy big heads

Contact the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, RMEF.org,
The have a traveling tour of the biggest elk. They might have interest in a donation that you could use as a tax deduction.
RMEF is a 501 C3

:yeah:

This is why I'm reluctant to spend much money on taxidermy work- to know that the heads will most likely just end up in a landfill after I'm gone. But I sure will enjoy looking at that bighorn sheep head on the wall when I'm 80 years old and no longer able to hunt!

Agree with what you're saying...but why are you quitting at 80? :o

I won't quit as long as I can still get around, but I thought I was being optimistic with that. Already have pain in one hip, both shoulders, a knee, and my back. Can't even imagine how I'll feel at 80.   :o

I would agree. 8-10k seems about right.

It is only worth what some one is willing to pay .  And it makes a big difference on the quality and the condition of the mount . Making #11 B&C makes a big difference . I would like to see it . You cant think of the cost of mount as a investment . It is more so about the memory .

Are you sure on the score? 328 is a long ways from # 11 B & C.

The #11 Roosevelt scores 372 1/8 and is on loan to the B&C National collection and the hunter was Robert H Gaynor.
Losing is natures' way of saying you suck.
