RIP Uncle Bill, you are and will be greatly missed.
A WWII vet, who earned a bronze star for bravery, was a POW for 1 day. He talked his German captors into surrendering, by warning them of the approaching 71st Infantry Division. They must have done the math and knew how outnumbered they were. Uncle Bill also cared for his shot and wounded Lieutenant and driver of the Jeep they were in when the Germans ambushed them and took them prisoners.
Uncle Bill was combat engineer with a forward recon group in the 271st Engineering Bn. He and his recon scout were first to stumble onto the Gunschkirchin (sp) death camp that the German guards had recently abandoned. Many of the prisoners in that camp had already died and their bodies were strewn throughout the camp. Those still alive were given all the rations that the Division could spare and were cared for.

Uncle Bill got my Father passionate about collecting war souvenirs, which started when my dad was just a kid. Uncle Bill gave my father a number of German daggers and a Walthers PPK police pistol, and now my fathers collection of US Veteran captured relics, mostly German, has grown to an impressive display.

I could go on and on about Great Uncle Bill. He was an incredible man who touched the heart of everyone he ever met throughout his whole life. I have fond memories of him at his cabin along the Boulder river outside of Big Timber Montana, that I will cherish forever. RIP Uncle Bill

Sorry for your loss Elk, I had a grandpa Bill who served on a navy minesweeper off the coast of Italy in the 42-43 offensive. They were a special group of men, we need more like them.

Thank you all for your generous comments. I think we have all lost folks from that generation and know they brought our country to its height. As that generation passes, our government seems to have forgotten what it took to get where we were. Without them our future seems dim.
