New to washington draws for moose
« on: April 17, 2015, 06:48:09 PM »
So whats the chance a guy new to washington could draw a moose tag first year out?  Dont mean to sound unknowledgeable but im new to the state and not familiar with how the draw process works and what bonus points do for you. Im only used to Az's draw. Thanks in advance.

Well if you pull it off don't post about it. All us haters will hate you for doing the impossible.  :chuckle:

Hot topic around here. Lots of good reading of you do a search.  My take on it is that bonus points are marketed as increasing your odds exponentially every year.  But in reality, your actual odds go down every year, even though you have more bonus points.  There just aren't enough tags to go around to even out the pool on an annual basis.
That said, it only takes one.

Odds are very low but you can't draw if you don't apply. Just think of it as a donation to the WDFW. It's only about $14. I've been applying for 20 years and haven't drawn yet.

The way the draw works, is your first time applying you have 1 point. The points are squared, and that's how many times your "name goes in the hat." People that have applied every year since the beginning of the point system will have 20 points this year. 20 squared is 400, so they have a 400 times better chance of drawing than you do.

To answer your question specifically - in 2014 there were 21,665 applications for 83 "Any moose" permits.

Of the 21,665 total applications, 2,851 of them were applications with 1 point. None of the applications with 1 point were drawn.

Just think of it this way- next year your odds will be four times better than this year. That's all the points are good for, keeps people applying every year, so they can continue building points, and not drawing any permits. Although I did finally draw bighorn sheep last year, and that's a tougher draw than moose.

I know someone who drew with one and another guy who drew with two.  Both killed monster bulls.  It can happen but you've got to be very lucky.
