Sinlahekin buck deer (whitetail)
« on: June 13, 2015, 10:16:11 AM »
So I drew this tag. Between the early high buck hunt and the general hunt I doubt I can hold out for this tag. It will be a nice back up plan though. I will most likely be in Idaho or Montana hunting whitetails in November which further decreases opportunity here. This does, however, present me with doing a hunt I always wanted to do. Kill a whitetail in WA, ID, and MT in a 2 week hunt. I would love to do this but don't know if I can pass on a 4 pt blacktail! I'd have to not do the earlier hunts to ensure this and well..... that's just not going to happen. I guess I'm fishing for opinions/ideas here from huntwa folks. Also, is this a tag that produces 140+ class bucks?

That's a good permit- don't waste it! Cancel all your other deer hunting plans, or if you go with others, don't carry a gun!

if you can hold out and put in the time. yes it process some really nice deer. everyone in my family has drawn this tag but me. the wife got it this year.  hold out for the perfect 4 point. before you shoot. in the 140's and don't pass on it. they don't get much bigger. every once in awhile you'll find a giant. good luck

I drew that permit also and I am torn also on the idea of not notching a tag before that. My elk hunting partners hunt that area for late archery and have a cabin and property there iv been told by them its a hit or miss tag for a nice one.

You won't miss anything by eating this tag and hunting your other hunts. Been several years since I've seen an honest 140" whitey come outta there and I'm a local.

Had that tag in the 80's.  Hunted in December.  Ended up killing one on the flats above Tonasket.

Back in the 80's, the only with tags were east and west Okanogan. Back when there was actually a good chance of talking a quality whitetail if you put your time in.

.......the more I try to remember, back in most of the 80's, wasn't the entire county open for the late whitey tag? Only rifle tag a guy could apply for if I remember right. Ran well into December.

The more I think about it this Hunt I believe I will pursue this tag. I can't pass up the help and knowledge of a retired game warden that lives and hunts in this area.

3nails, I know you know how the hunt, don't pass up a good blacktail to wait for this tag. I had it 5-6 years ago and would gladly trade it for a otc idaho whitetail tag. Kill a good high country blacktail and forget about the permit.....

Yeah I'm pretty sure this will be a strong back up tag for me. Maybe I'll TRY and hold out for a bigger blacktail because I have this tag. Between high buck, general season, and this late tag I SHOULD be able to kill a buck!

To make sure you get to enjoy the high country this year just find a really hot august day to shoot a bear, if you got it down early enough in the day you would still have time to catch the afternoon 'humpy bite'.  :chuckle:

Pretty good bet, maybe even "Lucky" to follow that hunch of yours...buck in my Avatar was from this tag in 2010. Same year your mystery man had the Quality rifle buck tag. Coincidentally I have drawn the quality tag this year.  :)

I hunted this last year archery for muleys and saw quite a few whitetail down low in the valley hiding in the thick stuff. My dad still tells me the story of him seeing a whitetail in the middle of the road that was a solid 200 inch deer, I always say he is full of it but after last year seeing a 170+ easy buck im starting to believe him more. :yike:

This is great hunt. I hunted it last year and did well... Like others have said don't shoot your tag up before this hunt unless it is a Whopper!

I drew that tag years ago. Scouted once, ended up filling my tag on a muley before the tag opportunity. Seen some nice white tail but not 140"....but that was only one trip scouting trip.
Just one more day

I'm kind of thinking more and more about this tag. I'm most definitely going to hunt blacktails up high during the regular season but this tag gives me an opportunity to really hold out for a monster. If I don't kill a big blacky then I'll hunt this. I have a ton of experience hunting whitetails and have killed several over 150". Rattling will be my ONLY method as I'm an addict! I can't keep track of how many I've rattled in but I'm sure it's 150+. I'll probably hunt as remotely as I can find. I'd appreciate any tips on starting points if anyone is willing to share via pm. Hunting pics will be posted on this thread.

Sounds like a great plan. The only thing I can add is that the whitetails in the Sinlahekin aren't very remote. But that shouldn't be a problem.

Well I passed on many blacktails and blew it on a real pig so this hunt is now going to happen for me. I'll be heading over on the 14th. I've got some areas picked out through Google Earth and feel pretty good about it. Is anyone else doing this hunt? I'll post up my experience with this hunt on this thread for future tag holders. Though I have a good plan in mind I'll take any other ideas for areas if you have any. Time to get the gear ready! If you know me you know what I'll be doing!  :chuckle:

That's a beautiful area. Used to hunt it 20-30 years ago. Here's my  :twocents:. Don't bypass those little island thickets of cattails. Kicked some bruisers out of them.

Well after hunting this tag I am not impressed. Stackemup sure got a dandy but I feel his buck may be exceptional for this hunt. I hunted an area that held a fair amount of deer and I saw 2 bucks and probably 30 does. For a mid November hunt I would say this is not good. The weather wasn't cold enough and there was no rut as of the 17th. Maybe other areas were better but all the other tag holders I talked had the same experience. I will probably not seek this tag in the future. My advise would be to save your vacation time and go to Idaho.  :twocents:

That hunt quite often produces some pretty good bucks, but as we all know, there are so many hidden factors that change from year to year. Too bad this was one of those years when the numbers and quality wan't there. That happens quite often where i hunt when the cats move in on the ridge. It sucks when a guy gears up and spends countless hours busting his ba--s packing in. That is one of the things I love about hunting though. It's a giant chess game. Nature makes its move and hunter makes his move. Gotta love it.
