No room for a second mount, what would you do?
« on: June 29, 2015, 06:47:20 PM »
This will be a moot point if I don't score a big bull but I've been thinking about a very possible dilimna I may face in elk season this year.  I have a quality archery bull tag in an area I know to hold big bulls and the season timing has improved my chances over previous years.  Here's the problem: I have a big bull mount at my place and there is absolutely no good location for a second.  If I happen to score I want to have the decision already made as to whether to take it to a taxidermist.  What would you do? :dunno:

Think about loaning one mount out to a sports store or some other business.

My trophy room is the master, because the wife won't let me display throughout the house. I'd move her next door and put it to bed!

I've been amazed at the places I've been able to fit deer and elk in the house. A little hacksaw and shortening of the 4's and 5's and it will fit most anywhere  :IBCOOL:

I vote for a euro. I have a full shoulder mount and the thing is a pain in the neck. If I could do it over I wouldn't have mounted it. I have another good bull up as a euro and it is just as impressive without sticking out 5'. Do the euro and take the cash you saved to buy 10 more trail cams!

Remodel the house to fit it and a few more. Shoot, my wife's uncle gave up and just built a trophy room onto the side of the house to have room for all his mounts.

:yeah:
Another thought is to  have a euro done or do it yourself, and also have the  hide tanned and store it till your living situation  allows for two bulls.   Assuming that you shoot a bull this year :twocents:
I don't always shoot big mule deer, but when I do, it's with a bow tech!

Make no mistake, my wife doesn't want another mount in the house but neither do I.  Sure, I could make room for it but it would clutter and overwhelm the decor of place and I don't want to do that.

I guess I'm wondering whether I should consider going ahead with another shoulder mount and maybe selling one of them for a profit.  But, since I would have a tough time parting with a trophy at any price, another strong consideration would be doing a Euro mount, but I think I would have a tough time NOT doing a shoulder mount if I happen to get an ever bigger bull this time.

The good thing about bringing up this subject is that I'm going to jinx myself and NOT get a bull so I won't have the dilemma after all. :chuckle:

I think the suggestion ofTanning the cape and doing a Euro mount is valid. Euro's are pretty sweet and no less of a trophy for preserving the memory. They look pretty cool in a garage as well

Is there any way of you ever owning a larger home?  I was fortunate to kill an awesome 6x6 for my first bull but didn't have the area to put such an animal in the home I had at the time.  So, I just had the cape dry tanned for safe keeping and mounted it 6 years later.  Not sure if this is at all a possibility but it worked great for me!!!

Tanning the cape and doing a euro mount does sound like a viable option, although I don't know that I'll ever want to load up a wall with more than one elk shoulder mount.  I've seen some folks do that and, unless they have a huge house, it can really take over the living space.

I've suggested to my wife that I could put one over the bed since the master bedroom has a vaulted ceiling but you might guess what her reaction was to that.  Maybe I'll do that anyway and pay extra for the taxidermist to put in moving eyeballs and a sound track that does cat calls when she walks through in the buff. :chuckle:

Sounds like an addition is in order or a new shop.  I would start making arrangements with a contractor or buddy at this time.  Don't let small things like space hang you up.   :yike:

I stopped doing shoulder mounts quite a few years ago, partly because room, but mainly money. I realized that the cost of mounts was the same as "next years" out of state hunt. I understand king the mounts for the sake of the trophy, but I can display euros and still do it justice.
I've got a quality elk tag this year and if I am successful it will be euro mounted, unless it goes #1 in the state!

I have room for two but given the rate of bull permit drawings in this state my house is not in danger of filling up anytime soon.

I could always display it until you have room for the second. ;)
