Watching those does will find you a good buck. Just keep looking.

Cold and frozen today , 10 does without bucks in tow a spike and a 2 point . Very little rub activity .  Ran into a couple quality tag holders in the area , they are seeing the same thing or less . two more days in Kapowsin them off to another area .

On cold clear mornings, watch the east-facing bowls. I spent 6 hours in a shady tree stand last November only to find some road walker shot a buck nearby early morning on an east-facing slope (with no plan of how to get him out). Remember? A friend of yours volunteered your game cart. Next day was cold and clear and I tried the same strategy (hunting early-morning sunshiny spots) only to find a temperature inversion had settled in, so that above 1000 feet it was nearly T-shirt weather. Anyway, with that number of does running around, it's weird that at least a few young bucks aren't chasing. Justyhunter and I saw the same thing up Cyclone Creek last Veterans' Day in extremely windy conditions (a tree crashed to the ground when we parked). We found several does in that drainage without any sign of a rutting buck.

hitting it again today- Had to let Hubby sleep in :)-- I was awake most the night-
Still a little surprised at how few bucks we've been on-- but it's still been fun so far!
We have next week off too so I'm sure the rut will happen!

The big boy in my area that only shows on my cameras for a week or two this time of year showed up Nov. 2 at 7:49 pm.
By my gauge its started. :)
By late buck he will have disappeared, not to be seen till next November.

Where I was hunting in general season, ( I tagged out on a spike during the opener and took my dad the last week ) there was zero rut activity. Unit 663. I found only one rub line on friday of the last week. Only saw a couple single does and one nice buck. ( would have dropped the buck but my dad loaded the mag backwards in excitement and when the mag fell to the ground the buck was very close and spooked into the thick. ) Good luck!

Sitka is correct in stating that Naselle - Nemah - Bear River hold some of the largest "real" blacktails around. I've lived in the area for over 50 years and get my "little" bucks every year.

And besides, she has a blacktail tag and every one knows that:

Don't tell all them southern Willamette valley boys that set the records that their deer aren't blacktails cause of the oak tree's.  :)

But yeah, if you want a coastal buck, I'd hunt from the Grays river west in the lowlands.

Stop at Johnson's One Stop in Naselle late in hunting season and check out the buck pictures on their bulletin board for some examples of local deer. There will even be some 3x3s that will knock your socks off. Big, wide, and extremely heavy racks.

Headed out toward Allyn today- we've scouted a bit in this area- not as much as Kapowsin but Hancock is now closed to  everyome  except those that were drawn for the elk tag there.
Hoping to see  some real rutting going on- have seen so many does and elk it's just stupid. Just the 2 point and a couple of spikes-
kind of amazed that  there just aren't any bucks to be seen, But  what the heck, we have been hunting hard and will keep at it-- hoping to see a bruiser this week-
 but I have until Dec 31 ...
won't have internet  for the next few days so will post  when I can.

mason or kitsap is where I would spend my time but that is because I typicaly have a couple dandys on my cameras and know the areas very very well to find big ones. that being said if you don't know of a big buck that you are going after I wouldn't waste my time with the units, they can be very difficult to find deer in. I know of 3 bucks that would hit the 120 mark and maybe up to 130 with 100's of hours of scouting

Havent been in 578 for a couple years but king mt. north of trout lake used to and might still produce some good bucks.  Could be flooded with elk hunters this time of year though.
