I posted this question in another section (Varmints & Small Game. . .where I normally spend most of my time when on this forum) but I got no response so don't get mad if you see it elsewhere on this forum. I thought I might have a better chance of getting a response in this section. . .

I just bought a Weatherby Vanguard Varmint Special in .22-250 for coyote hunting. . .this is my first new rifle and my first high-power centerfire rifle (I grew up in Illinois where there are no rifle seasons. . .only shotgun/rimfire allowed) so I don't have a lot of scope/bolt action experience. Can anyone suggest a set of rings/base that won't make it too terribly difficult for me to load my Weatherby Vanguard Varmint Special. . .the magazine loads only from the top. . .it is non-removeable. . .

. . .Thanks!!!
Joel

Pretty much any of them. I like Tally's... but I also use Warne's. Leupold dual-dovetails are nice too... but you need to make sure they line up well. I'm not a big fan of windage adjustable bases (std. Leupolds, et all)... I've had bad luck with them moving around a little. I believe the Vanguard will accept most bases made for the Rem. 700... so you've got that going for you.

I don't think that windage adjustable rings would appeal to me either. . .if my rings were slightly out of alignment I would rather use a scope ring alignment tool and lap the rings rather than have a adjustable rings. . .

Cool about the Rem 700 compatibility though!!!

Thanks for your input. . .I just didn't know if one type would make loading easier than another. . .especially since I have to load from the chamber. . .

As long as you get something with a 2-piece base, the mounts shouldn't interfere with loading your gun.

I went with the leupold base and rings designated for the mark v.  read a lot about too many vanguards needing shims with the rem 700 bases but that the mark v bases would be fine.  may have been BS but my .257 wby is a tack driver

Leupold has a 2-pc. base specifically for the Weatherby Vanguard. . .it is the same part number as the Rem 700 2-pc. base according to the catalog. . .

. . .one more question. . .ring/base material. . .does it matter. . .I can get steel Warne rings/base or aluminum Leupold rings/base for basically the same $. . .

. . .is one material gonna be any better than the other???

It's a .22-250 so recoil shouldn't be an issue right???

Oh yeah. . .one more question. . .what height rings would be appropriate for a heavy barrel. . .or is this just preference. . .I would imagine I wouldn't want/like high or super-high, but what about low or medium???

you should know the objective lens size of the scope, then probably a medium with a heavy barrel, stay as low as possible. go to leupold's site and there is a chart that tells you what you would likely need.

I have weaver bases and rings on my vanguard and they are med high with more then enough room for a 50mm objective.

I would like a 50mm objective lens but it's outside my budget. . .for now it will be a 40mm objective lens. . .

. . .I'll check out Leupold's site

I like tall enough bases, so I can carry my gun by my scope. I know...bad form....but that is what I have always done......

I know scopes are built rugged these days but carrying my rifle by the scope would just make me paranoid about screwing it up. . .I couldn't do it. . .

I hear ya' but I havent messed one up yet doing this. (yet...) I figured if they can take the beating they normally do, from dropping, to magnum size vibration and shock, they should be able to support the gun...
