Thank you blackveltbowhunter, you got some nice heavy BT sheds yourself! And Lewy your right I got it draining now, I've found a couple like this and boy they can really smell haha but that chunk of bone still attached to the base and the piece taken out of the main beam is what makes me wonder if it wasn't ready to come off yet

You're right.  No way is that a normal shedding situation.  It caused a good bit of force to break it off like that.  Could be because of a fight with another bull or some serious raking of the ground or something.

When do blacktails and elk on the west side start really dropping antlers? I have been out a lot the last 2 years in February, March and parts of April but have never had any luck. Looking forward to searching again this year!

yeah that area is pretty grassy so he could have been raking, I didn't think about that. Thanks for the input everyone.

blacktails start dropping anytime late December, I saw a two point still packing just 3 days ago.  Elk take a bit longer, more like the end of march till May.  Seen bulls packing before in first week of April.

Here is  the massive set from a buck we called "Wanna-be", he wanted to be a 2 point! I found the first half on Jan 2nd and the wife found the other half 2 days later. He is one of the 8 deer that stay around all the time. This is real early for around here, they usually start to fall end of Feb. Maybe the weather has something to do with it. It has been in the teens at night and upper 20's to low 30's during the day. Then  throw in snow every so often. Back to the old days.

Out for a ride with the father in law yesterday. Picked this up on our way back home, not an hour after we passed the same spot on our way in. The tracks came right up and dropped it in our horse tracks, and turned back to his bed fifty yards off the logging road. By the time we searched for the other side we still had a 2 hour ride back and had to get going... we'll be back!
