I don't own any sports utility rifles  :chuckle: , but if I did, a Crimson Trace MVF-515G would be attached. It has both a 200 lumen light and a green laser, both of which are activated by pressure pad. It does NOT fit your bill for inexpensive. A couple of notes:
  • The green laser is enough to light up an entire room, often making the flashlight superfluous
  • Unlike a red laser, a green laser can illuminate a fine point on my neighbors garage even in bright daylight*
  • Weapon mounted lights encourage breaking of Rule 3: Never point your firearm at something you're not willing to destroy. What if that sound downstairs is my kid going for a glass of milk?  :o
  • I have a couple of glow sticks in the night stand that could be tossed into the corners of rooms/downstairs as needed. While illuminating a target straight on will likely blind them in night time conditions it is indeed wise to be weary of giving away your position if in search mode if the bad guy happens to be at your side when the light is first illuminated.

*=Special note from my attorney: test this before attaching to your rifle   ;)

Nothing wrong with irons and a trijicon front.

This is a great idea even if I decide to put a holo sight on! Are Trijicon rears(that flip back to wide aperture any good? They seem to be substantially cheaper bought as a set?

Call me old school, I like to give myself every advantage possible if and when the time comes. Flashlights and lasers (with the exception of IR) "can" give the bad guy knowledge of my position.

The rears  are fine. I just don't see needing one for inside/ around the house. I'm not much for flashlights either and honestly I'd take the money that you would spend on a optic and light and buy ammunition and shoot more.

I'm sure you have reasons for using the AR for home defense and I hope I don't kick off the same old what's better debate, but I think a quality handgun/ shotgun combo is the best for defending ones family in a residential setting.

I am building a "layered" defense,
XD .40 in a holster attached to the back of the headboard.
Remi-semi 16 ga, short barrel, loaded with slug/00 buck alternated, hidden mount.
M&P 15, within easy access.

LOL

Nice!

You might consider a 249 or maybe go retro with a 1919?  :chuckle:

What's funny is when we did room entry's or any low or high clad entry's , we had all the fancy new bad boy tech gear and 99% of us barrel shot, unless your highly trained, the normal person won't aim or aquire anyways, you just end up pointing and pulling, that's why for home defense your better off with a short shotgun with 00 buck, or if you have a lot of rooms with family then load up with 6 shot, when you get the intruder down walk up and cap them, make sure they are not breathing when you call 911
my grandpa always said "if it aint broke dont fix it"

I put a Meprolight front sight on tonight. Made a big difference for these old eyes, even in light.
LOL

So far I have put on a Magpul forward vertical grip.

I settled on the Bushnell Elite Tactical CQTS 1X32mm Red Dot sight.

http://www.bushnell.com/tactical/riflescopes/elite-tactical/cqts-1x-32mm

I shot a an AR with this sight mounted well forward. It gave a great sight picture and maintained very good peripheral vision with both eyes open.
Should meet my needs.
