I know this is coming late but it's better late than never!  This was my fourth year hunting elk after moving to WA from Wisconsin.  Spike only units can be tough but I was lucky enough this year and got a good stalk on a big herd over two miles.  I wasn't even sure there was a spike in the group until he stepped out broadside from me at 40 yards.  This was my first elk & I shot him on public land without vehicle access; it was a seven hour hike to get him out.

Congrats WI to WA, spike hunting is brutal, you scored one of the toughest trophies out there.  What was going on with that left antler base?

Thanks, Rainier10!  It was the most challenging hunt I have ever had.  Nothing too exciting with the left antler base; I think the angle might be strange.  It does look like it juts out from the head further than it should, though.  I was pretty excited at this point, had no one else to take the photo, and was using my phone so I didn't frame it as nicely as I would have liked.

I looks like a tufted of hair between the antler base, like he's got curly afro bangs.

Was it in a spike unit or a true spike unit? I just ask because it always seems guys hunting the spike units are always killing true spikes when I all see hunting the true spike units is 1x2's lol :chuckle:

Two of my hunting partners got these bulls opening weekend of Western modern. They seem to have this spot figured out. Seems like every year on opening weekend I am packing out their bulls from the exact same location. My quad comes in handy for them, and I only charge back strap, tenderloin, and burger.
