Looking into a Quality deer hunt not in washington in 2018
« on: November 29, 2016, 01:22:58 PM »
My hunting partners where talking about a good place to shoot a GOOD to GREAT buck. I don't want to pay money to hunt a Washington buck that I can get on my own. We want Quality. Either a ranch or eastern Montana, North Dakota even thinking some of those big bucks in Canada. (MULEDEER). I am just trying to start doing research to get a place narrowed down cause I am sure we would have to do some sort of deposit in 2017. Ideas please.

As in Washington bucks, I mean I see pictures of these hunts people go on and they are average bucks for this state and pay 3500 to 5000.

Broadus, MT........billed as the Mule Deer Capital of The World.

Start early and familiarize yourself with the Block Management program.  That will allow you to make
reservations to hunt on lots of very big ranches at no cost to you.

http://fwp.mt.gov/hunting/hunterAccess/blockman/

There are quite a few outfitters that have leases on ranches in the area.  We saw many bucks on ranches
that were leased to outfitters.  Just do a Google search on outfitters in the Powder River or Broadus areas.

There is also considerable public land to hunt around Broadus.

Good luck !!

1. What is a GOOD deer to you?
2. What is a GREAT deer to you?
3. Why do you want to pay for it?
3a. Would a 160 that you worked for be better to you than a 180 you paid for?

Biggest questions have been laid out. Budget, what's a good buck and what's a great buck.

That is a great option too. Friend just got back from an archery hunt in Alberta and said he passed on multiple 170+ bucks holding out for a 200. He has shot lots of good bucks and doesn't lie. I saw a few pics of bucks he passed on  :yike:

Unless I'm mistaken, you have to use outfitters/guides if you hunt Canada as a non resident/citizen.

If you just want to kill a big deer go to Alberta with one of the top outfitters.

If you want to hunt big deer, buy a CO landowner voucher and go hunt.

I have heard from several trusted sources that Alberta is the place to go for a truly top of the line mule deer hunt. Every time I look into it though I get suckered into the sheep pages and ask my wife if she happens to have squirrelled away 40k...

Seriously though, Alberta.

That's a good way of putting it. What do you want out of the experience?

Low success rate on big bucks.  You need to spend a lot of cash for the best hunts//ranches.

It was with an outfitter that he knows so he kind of had the best of both worlds. If you saw the bucks he passed you would  :puke:

Alberta.  Unbelievable hunting, and it doesn't get any where near the pressure USA does.

As others have mentioned, go to Alberta. If you'd like to see what Alberta deer are like and you are around Twisp, go to Hank's grocery and look at all the head-mounts he has above the frozen section. Almost all of the huge ones are from Alberta and I am talking HUGE. There are several that have 30 plus inches of width and tons of mass. Hank has many 180 or greater bucks in the store for anyone to see.

Most are with Silver Sage Outfitters http://Http://silversageoutfitters.com and a couple recent ones from Big Knife Outfitters http://www.bigknifeoutfitters.com

Here is Hanks buck from a couple weeks ago.

I might be looking into the BLM in Montana. That sounds Like it could be a good hunt if I can get away from others. Also the Colorado Private sounds inviting. I will have to see how much that runs. Alberta sounds Awesome but looks like big money maybe. We are looking at around 3500. Just trying to get a starting point.

Thanks for your responses

I did a public land Montana hunt with some buddies this year.  Ate like kings and stayed 8 nights in a hotel and the whole trip, including tag and meat processing, cost me $1500.   We all took good bucks and had a great time.  I think anything over 170" on that hunt is a great buck.  High success rate on nice bucks.

Several states offer landowner tags you might look into.

If looking for big deer with a budget of $3500 I would buy a voucher in Colorado. A buddy hunted a 3rd season unit that would cost $1500ish for a voucher this year and killed a nice buck. They were hunting a 200"+ buck that another hunter ended up killing. I killed a nice buck there also this year. Colorado is hard to beat when it comes to mule deer. Every unit produces nice bucks.

If you had a bigger budget I would suggest either the eastern plains or Alberta.

Good luck finding the right hunt.
