what do you guys think of this pond
« on: October 04, 2007, 08:39:20 PM »
its a beaver pond about the size of a football field.  a fair amount of lily pads. lots of down logs and submerged stumps. and the best part of it is no one else will be hunting it. but the thing is i have no idea how much the ducks would like a place like this. what do you guys think.

To me it doesn't look like a place where you'd get a lot of ducks coming in because there isn't a lot of feed. But it would be worth a try if you don't have a better place to go. You'd probably see a couple mallards, maybe some teal, and good chance for a couple of wood ducks. It might be worth just checking on every once in a while to see how many ducks are sitting there, especially later in the season when new ducks come in from up north.

It's a good looking pond.  But, it's really important to understand what the pond is near.  It's obviously a west side lake.  If it is near big water (Puget Sound, Willapa, Grays or the Ocean)  This would be a good spot on big windy days.  However, if this is just near the foothills with nothing for food or alternatives for the ducks.. It probably won't be very productive.

Yep, I have hunted a couple like that, and found a few birds, but if it is not between other food sources, it may be a one shot deal, bang, ducks are gone...still worth a visit...go for it!

If it's near an area that has a ton of pressure and it does not freeze up you might score on ducks seeking a quiet spot.

I live on a 40 acre beaver pond near Arlington and it's full of ducks. Bad weather will chase them off the bay and they'll look for places like this. My lake flows into the Stilly and attracks cutthroat. Mostly it's full of crappy. Try a early morning jump shoot.

Do you shoot those ducks Hermit? If the quacking bothers you I might be able to help you.  :chuckle: I'm South of Arlington too. Got a few working the fields around my house.

I'm just south of Arlington too. That little lake at the Y of the burn rd. and McKelroy with the cyclone fence? My lake is about a mile south, back in the woods. Whenever those people stock their little lake they swim upstream into my place. I used to have a blind set up and hunted it all the time. But too many people moved there and the *censored* hits the fan if you start to shoot anything. I've got a HERD of racoons that tear everything up and fight outside my bedroom window but being a 2nd shifter I can't get up at 4:30 am. I'm kool with the little black bear, the beavers and otters but I'd get rid of those coons in a heartbeat. If that pond you posted a picture of is off the burn rd. it's full of black crappy. Some big ones too.

have you seen those quiet .22 shells. really all you can hear is the action of the gun. that would make it easy to get rid of those coons

Olsen Lake drains along the power lines. Used to walk in from the power station, down the gas line. Now it's all private, in someone's yard or fenced and posted. At least I can still fish in my yard. Neighbors used to be more friendly to strangers but kids started hanging around, then there was a rash of stolen cars dumped off then people threw litter everywhere. Now everything is gated, fenced and guarded. Cops are always throwing people off there now. Overpopulation is out of control, and doesn't seem to be getting any better.
