Bands
« on: December 24, 2016, 07:13:39 AM »
My hunting buddy and I got on the subject, while sitting in the blind the other day, of the different species of ducks with bands.  I have picked up canada geese with bands, drake and hen mallards, but a couple years back I picked up a banded drake wigeon.  Last year my hunting buddy picked up a banded Redhead (picked up a few non-banded redheads at the corner bar way back in college, but thats another story...) and a Bull Sprig with a band.

Curious of non canada/mallard banded birds you guys may have shot...

Mostly mallards for me. Have gotten two pintails and two green winged teal also. Man those real have some tiny bands. #5 size I believe. My favorite is my harlequin band though. Still gunning for that elusive spoonbill band though.  :chuckle:

When I lived in KY and hunted the central flyway I had some buddies kill banded wood Ducks and my dad killed a double banded black duck (one band was a normal band and the other was a $100 reward band). Me personally only killed banded mallards.

Honestly, I've never seen one.  What is the general ratio?  How many birds do you shoot per band, it has to be north of 100/1.

I saw this at Cabelas the other day, a waterfowling metal detector. What do they think of next?

If I shot one this year it would be like 1/900. I did do a snow goose hunt a few years ago out of state, and two of us pounded the same banded Ross goose. He kept it. The guide said it was only the 2/3 banded Ross he'd ever seen or heard of being killed.

It all depends on where your hunting and the zone of influence I think as to banding locations.  Some guys will get a ton of them and others may never see one.  The number of birds harvested also increases your odds.  Our club where I grew up hunting averaged about 36 banded birds per season and many of those were taken the first month of the season.
Eagle lakes on the other hand average close to 100 bands per season.

My son shot a banded wigeon this year and I shot a banded mallard on Wednesday, so we are on the board.  We usually average 1-5 bands per season, but used to do a lot better on them when I lived down south.

Ratio used to be about 1 band per 100 birds.

Got this beauty just the other day.  Too bad it was immature with no pin, would have been taxidermy worthy. Guess I could remove it and put it on a nicer bird  :dunno:

Other than mallards and a Cackler,  I've got a band on a buffle head  (my buddy did too, the next weekend), a bluebill,  and wigeon.
