I think I'm finally going to order a pair of gauntlets after today. That freezing cold water is hard on your hands and fingers.

I use hay hooks to pull and set traps.

:yike: I think I would quit for the day if that happened. I can't imagine getting my waders instantly full of that icy water. That's horrible!

I have a hook pole that I use for pulling cages but whenever I need to move sticks or rocks I usually need to reach in at some point. Plus setting cages is far easier with my hands. That edge set required me to reach up under that cut bank and that's when I was like, why am I torturing myself! They cost like $30 in Minnesota trapping products.

I realized today that I need a packboard! Packing that 50 lb back 1/4 mile to the truck with just your hands was no fun.

Mike and I use straps made from old car seat belts with riveted clips on each end.  The clips work on any cage trap or transfer cage and we use rope to tie 'adapter loops to the clips for the beaver's feet if we are packing out just  the beaver.

I won't be cooking any muskrat though. No matter how good you make them sound   :chuckle:
My buddy eats the rats. The back strapes cubed, pocko, and fryed. He says it is amazing. But hell no.

Pulled all my traps yesterday and went to a different area today that had some beaver sign last year. This year, nothing anywhere. Didn't set any traps but put out some prebait for cats in a few spots. Found some winter chanterelles in a spot that always has them this time of year and picked enough to at least add some flavor to dinner tonight.
Decided to make some beaver-itos and just threw the shrooms in with the meat. Not the best flavor but shrooms are very healthy for you so I figured why not. Very delicious overall though!

The way this season is headed, I'm probably going to have more meat than if I would have filled my deer tag. I took the hind quarters and back straps from those last four beavers and when it was boned out it was probably about ten pounds of pure meat.
