Utah cow hunt with BearPaw
« on: January 14, 2017, 06:51:16 PM »
I leave on Monday with my son (12 y/o) and my dad for our cow elk hunt in Utah. Going on an out of state, guided elk hunt is one of the last big things on my dad's bucket list, so we've been working on this for a couple years now. He's never hunted elk and hasn't really hunted anything in 18 years, so this is a pretty big deal to him. He's not in great health (emphysema, cancer, all round bad health) and not getting any younger at 62 y/o so we needed a pretty low impact hunt. The cow elk hunts are perfect since they're relatively low impact and none of us really care about antlers. We've always been "fill the freezer" hunters.

We booked it for last January but we canceled after the weather and the elk just didn't cooperate and rescheduled for this year. As of today we're good to go and plan on leaving early Monday morning to drive to Duchesne Utah where we'll be staying. There was some concern for a few days about getting a care give to stay at home with my mom, but that's all been handled.  My folks were in a car wreck almost 10 years ago leaving my mom a quadriplegic with a spinal injury at her C5 vertebrae. While she's able to scoot around once she's in her chair, she still needs somebody present in case something goes wrong. So no care giver, no hunt. All's good now though!

My goal is to tag something with my 338/375 Ruger Striker and I have my dad using a Ruger 77 tang safety in 300 Win Mag. I'm bringing along the 338 SnipeTac pistol too, but that's unlikely to come out unless everything is perfect; it's not exactly a "field" gun. :chuckle: Maybe I'll try and get a video of Dale shooting it!

I'll post updates and some pics as the hunt unfolds. No matter what, it should be a pretty good time for all of us.

:yeah:
Pain is temporary, achieving the goal is worth it.

I didn't say it would be easy, I said it would be worth it.

The Snow has got them all pushed down low into every ones back yards.  I had about three hundred head out my window this morning.  Neighbor (a cattleman) didn't take too kindly to them hanging out in his feed yard and by his hay stacks.  Sounded like world war three with all the rifle shots. He wasn't shooting them, just trying to run them off.  I'm sure they will be back tonight in the cover of darkness.  You shouldn't have any trouble finding something to fill your tags but you might have to trudge through a little snow.  Duchesne is just a little ways from me.

 :yike: good luck
"When my bow falls, so shall the world. When me heart ceases to pump blood to my body, it will all come crashing down. As a hunter, we are bound by duty, nay, bound by our very soul to this world. When a hunter dies we feel it, we sense it, and the world trembles with sorrow. When I die, so shall the world, from the shock of loosing such a great part of ones soul." Ezekiel, Okeanos Hunter
