Help with new muzzy
« on: February 22, 2017, 08:17:22 AM »
I'm looking for a high end muzzy that is
Legal in Washington.I'm using a knight big
Horn now and love the gun.
Just want to have a muzzy that is high quality
That is custom and shoots small groups.
I'm a rifle convert and plan to hunt only with my
Muzzy even during rifle season if I get to hunt out
Of state or get a oil tag.
Thanks.

If you are still hunting the rifle season anything goes on the muzzy.  Are you wanting to hunt during the Washington muzzy season as well?  If you are hunting during the muzzy season then it gets tougher to find one that is legal in Washington.

@Sabotloader has been super helpful when I had muzzy questions.

What you want would be met with a scope on your current gun but not legal during muzzy season.

Gunwerks and this guy offer 500 yard muzzys for use during scope-legal seasons.

I am in Idaho and I hunt the regular rifle season over here with a muzzleloader also.  I am currently using a Knight Ultra-Light.  It is a 50 cal which I have swapped the Kevlar stock out for a thumbhole.

During ML season I just pull the scope and drop a NECG peep site on the scope blocks...

The down side, if there is one, is the range,  for Elk I limit myself to 200/250 yards scoped or peep and of course for deer with the scoped rifle I can easily extend that range.

Another Knight that might hold a little more interest for you might be the Mountaineer - same rifle as the ULite but has a longer barrel which would be an advantage for extending your range especially shooting BH 209 powder and using a shotgun primer.

Again I have swapped the factory stock out for a factory composite thumbhole.

If you are interested in a custom - got two thoughts for you a Copper Custom ML...

If interested contact Glenn at: gmay@cooperfirearms.com tell him I sent you his direction

Another good custom builder is Jeff Fisk at  Bestill Creations Custom Muzzleloaders - just do a internet search to get the contact information...

 I think that the muzzy season in Washington is the best combination of challenge, timing of the season, amount of animals seen and lack of people seen of all of the seasons.

I have not talked to Glenn about a Western Legal Cooper in some time.  I know initially we did and yes there was some thought of one.

So I do not know right now, email him and ask him his thoughts.

The Cooper is really a good quality gun the barrel is a true centerfire barrel modified for their breech plug.
Keep shooting muzzleloaders - They are a blast!!

Rainier, I'd have to agree. I'm originally from New England and witnessed the ML revolution, if you will. In NH you are able to hunt earlier in the season, w/ a scope, w/ 209, w/ in line, etc... I think it was great to get people like me introduced to it and it was wonderful for companies like T/C, offshoots of T/C, and the industry as a whole. However, I really enjoy and respect WA's more strict definitions. I know of many that hunt in Maine and New Hampshire with beautiful traditional pieces similar to what Mountain Hunter linked, but they're doing so in the same woods and at the same time of year as people using what Magnum linked. It just seems a little strange? It wouldn't be a stretch to suggest that opening day of ML has, or has nearly surpassed the opening day of modern in terms of hunter volume back there. Just something I've considered. Yet, to many of the traditionalists here, I'm the one tip-toeing w/ the regulations using the Black Diamond. Generally speaking, no matter the sport, legal season, or legal method, it's only the sportsman's integrity, ethics, and morals which I ultimately care about. Anything that promotes the heritage is a win by be and a win for me.
