Got my ham ticket today!
« on: March 19, 2017, 07:29:57 PM »
Got my tech license today, and now want to put a mobile rig in my truck.

Anyone have any experience with the lower end Chinese units amazon has? Looks like I can get set up for 150$ or so, I know this isn't as good as a name brand, but Chinese stuff has seem to come a ways in quality if they spec it right.

Can't imagine I'm gonna be in to many spots where it's life or death of my radio doesn't work, it's more of a novelty/hobby for me, that's why I'm not wanting to drop 500$ on a radio at this point, though in the future I may.

I thought Mandy just running g one of my baeofeng uv5r's with a mag mount antenna would work OK, but I want the higher power a dedicated unit gives.

Good job. I'd just NUT up but that's just me...

Normally I would practice buy once, cry once, but I'm unsure if this is a hobby that's gonna stick, and I have a lot of other things gonna be sucking my money up over the next 9 months or so, so I figured with a smaller investment, I could start to learn what features I'd want in a radio, and still have a spare mobile to stick in another rig if need be later

I saw an ad on Craigslist from an old guy offering a bunch of stuff for next to nothing because he wanted to get someone involved in it. Might be worth keeping an eye out on CL?
