Shedded deadheads
« on: March 27, 2017, 09:01:34 AM »
So lately I've been finding more and more deadheads, that were shed with no visible growth. So in my mind they died very soon after shedding with the drop in testosterone. But I can never find the head gear! Has anyone ever picked up sheds from a deadhead and if so what was the situation? i.e. Was the head down in a creek with the horns on the ridge? Vice versa?

I have come across a dead head like the ones you found.  If you find some sheds I really doubt you can actually say "these antlers belonged to this buck".  Most likely the buck isn't going to die right on top of his antlers, ya know.

When the buck of justice final set was found it was right near a huge shed out carcass. So it does happen.

I figured if I found a shed in the area it would be of the same age as the head, same size bases, and possibly the same shape to the pedicle? The pedicle being the way to say it's a match to the skull

I found one last year that had one horn on and one horn off.  Found the shed at the bottom of the hill and looked up and there was the skull with one horn still attached. It was for sure the match to that buck. Only about 20 yards apart.

Sorry I forgot I posted to this thread regarding the buck of justice.  I'll post a link to the video with the lucky sob talking about it.  Most sportsmans warehouse stores have replicas of this buck hanging above the gun counter. I think the guy says the sheds were right around the corner from the skeleton with huge pedicles.
