Spring Bear - Huckleberry 121
« on: April 05, 2017, 04:53:16 PM »
I drew spring bear for GMU 121. I have never been there and I am looking for some advice on:

1.)Dates (I was thinking of going around the last weekend of April, is this to early?)
2.) Any suggested "Hunny hole" locations that I should be looking at?
3.) ATV/Motorcycle - I have access to both, but are they necessary? I like to get back deep and hike a ton but don't want to be hiking if "Mr. Renthals" is going to be  going through rhythm sections close by all the time

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, as this will be my first time bear hunting.

Thank you in advance.

1)  Nope, not too early
2) Lots of bears in the public land areas north and south of Springdale/Hunters Road
3) Can be handy, but in that area, getting in deep is only getting you closer to another road.
4) Take a predator call, very effective in the spring.  Do some research on calling bears, a little different than calling yotes.

Good luck!

Welcome to the forum. Some tips.

Don't sight in your rifle, you won't be using it. Just grab a huge cooler, fill it with beer, tow it and your RV around logging roads.

Stop when you need a cool one, unload the ATVs and motorcycles, and rip around a bit. Don't worry about noise. Bears love that stuff. Also, they like the casino. Be sure to spend some quality time there too.

Sleep in, wear denim (or other cotton), rip elk bugles for sport, get cheeto cheese all over your lifted truck u just bought from NW Motorsports.

If you see one closer than 1000yds pass it up. I only poke em past 1000... I leave the close ones for the bow/arrow boys.

Gonna be late this year. Went up to one of my leases Sunday and nothing growing very much at 2500-3000 ft. Usually  at this time of year the bear grass is growing pretty good and I'll see bear sign..  Nothing on Sunday.   We had to bust through snow drifts on the roads on north slopes.

I also got this tag with my sister. My uncle lives in rice and I was wondering if anyone has hunted that  area before?

Hang out at one of the taverns in Colville or Chewelah and listen for someone bitching about bear knocking their trash cans all over.

Brother in law is in the area and so far no sign of bear, either on cameras or in the snow he still has on the ground.  Ohhh, and a lot of the roads are washed out over flowing creeks.

I think season will unfold as a normal year with a May green up, the snow is leaving very fast now but access will be muddier than usual and be careful about washouts. A lot of hunters will likely get stuck in soft and/or washed out roads, it will be a good spring for the tow companies. I would not try to go bear hunting until sometime in May.

I have been poking around since I drew this tag too. It's way soft and the roads are in bad shape. There is a lot of snow in the shadows and elevation yet. Be super cautious about slides. The roads are sliding all over.

As of now  I've not seen a turd or track...but I'd bet any day now they will be out in full force. The grass in the burn is barely showing and mostly moss.

I'd expect the 2nd and 3rd weeks of may to be when they start to knock them dead.
