Tikka T3X 30.06 hunter
« on: April 17, 2017, 09:30:52 AM »
Hey guys, I just picked up a Tikka T3X Hunter in 30.06, I was just trying to get a jump on what bullet and grain work well with this gun before I sight it in. I have a couple boxes of Remington core-lokt 165gr bullets I was shooting with my old gun that worked fairly well, but was just curious what some of you other tikka 30.06 guys had been using. Thanks

I have family members who shoot Barnes 180 grain TSX in 30-06. But there are A LOT of different bullets that shoot well in many different applications for the '06.

In a lightweight rifle like the Tikka, I'd be using a 150 grain bullet for less recoil. I'd go with Barnes or a Nosler Etip if the accuracy was good.

In an .06 I wouldn't worry about the light bullet if you put a limbsaver on it. They really reduce the recoil. With the stock pad a light bullet sure wouldn't be a bad idea.

I would stick with a bullet in the 180 range. The 06 has always performed better down range and on impact with at least a 180. The difference in felt recoil between a 150 and a 180 is 2.5-3 pounds of recoil energy at most. The tikka is only around a pound lighter than most of the other box rifles out there so the recoil isn't as bad as one would think, especially from a 30-06. That being said bullet choice comes down to what your gun likes? Try some Accubonds, Barnes trippleshock, Berger, or if the core locks shoot well use those!
