Bug spray
« on: April 19, 2017, 11:04:33 AM »
For those of you that hunt the high county in Aug. for bear.  You know that the bugs can or are a problem. What type of bug spray do you use and does it help?

Thanks

Sawyer Permethrin.

Make sure you read the instructions a week or so before you leave. It doesn't work like normal bug spray.

That actually works?

I just tossed one out in the garbage.  Figured it was hokey gimmick.

Oh trust me it works fantastic.  I have sat in the swamps in Virginia hog hunting and never have skeeter one land on me even though there are thousands around me.  Yes it works very well.  I also use the permethrin on my pants for the ticks!!

Not sure Thermacell would be my exclusive high country deterrent as it has challenges in windy conditions.  I carry Ben's Wipes and have been pleased with those.  Carry a small zipper bag and you can use one wipe multiple times.  If you can find Silver Thread silk weight long jons that works good as well.  Just harder to find those these days.  As for ticks, I got turned onto Ortho Home Defense a few years ago.  So far zero ticks.  Have to plan further in advance when using it, but no longer have to search the country looking for Sawyers.  Closest Lowes or Home Depot works!  Also works great for keeping the creepy crawlies out of the house!
He asked, Do you ever give a short simple answer?  I replied, "Nope."

thermocell's are great and work as advertised. with that said all things have there place and the high country is not a thermocell's place of glory. i think if you were in an area with little to no wind then yes it will do well but overall that is rare when above tree line.  i at all times have a small bottle of repel 100 in my bino chest case 1fl oz. for when if its bad i bring another larger size as well in my back pack. the last couple years have been horrible at times even above 7000 ft..........hopefully the cold this winter will help with that. good luck, have a great season..........

We use the outdoorsman strength spray.  I also use thermocell when sitting and wind is calm.  Also carry the off wipes and tie em to my hats or something when its bad.  Certain times and high places it gets super bad and nothing works perfectly.  I will wear a head net and long sleeves then.  Skeeters don't care when they are really hungry!

I didn't find my thermacell to work worth a damn last spring.  So, i found the highest DEET spray I could find and enjoyed the hunt.

I got some stuff called REPEL, it is lemon-eucalyptus and DEET free.  I don't know how effective it was, because there was enough wind last year that bugs were kept down anyways.  I imagine it is probably less effective than DEET, but I'm not interested in being around DEET.
