New to elk hunting - early archery 356 pointers?
« on: May 30, 2017, 05:00:15 PM »
If you want to shoot me a PM instead of discussing anything here, feel free.

So, I think it's going to be my first season hunting elk seriously. Looking at the harvest percentage, seems like people do well in this GMU compared to others. I have a 10 month old and my wife also works, so I'm not sure how much time I'm going to be able to take off for the hunt itself. I plan on getting some boots on the ground as soon as the pass opens and I can make it over.

With that in mind, I had a few specific questions. Also, I have used the search function on this topic and know there are many many threads. I have yet to read through them all, so forgive me if there's a good one I missed.

Considering it's my first season, is there a section you'd recommend(northwest/south east/etc, not asking for a specific spot) me to start? Also, where should I avoid? I know there are a lot of outfitter camps around Blankenship lakes, and I'm sure there are more that I just don't know the location of yet.

Any experienced 356 hunters want to share some other info? Maybe tips or things you wish you had known early on or to keep an eye out for? I know I need to get into shape, and then expect to still not be in good enough shape.

I appreciate it guys.

Pass is open but the snow is still deep.  A month away from doing any serious boots on the ground.

Good luck!

Was there this weekend. Chinook pass was still closed.

Snow too deep to drive in at 4500' by bumping lake

Thanks for the heads up guys. I guess I'll wait around a month before I head up and start really getting after it.

Chinook pass should be open shortly if you plan on hunting from that side. Hiked up American ridge, didn't get significant snow until around 4900'. Weather has been warm, lot of snow is melting pretty quick.

I know a little bit about 356.  I had the archery tag a few years ago.  Its a tough hunt,  but its worth it .
SHUT UP & BENCH ! ! ! Bench BIG or go Home.
