Stella gmu 504 antlerless January hunt questions
« on: May 15, 2017, 06:49:58 PM »
So my dad and I were going through muzzleloader  antlerless  options  and going over dates and always up for a new area  I thought I'd look for some input on the Stella  gmu for elk cow tag
My dad and brother would put in for it I drew multi season and don't really wanna apply for any antlerless hunts . Just looking for experiences and thoughts on a January hunt . Be cold but hell of a way to kick off a new year. Any info would help thanks yall

Buddy had it last season. Had multiple chances to connect but missed. Saw lots of elk, have to hike a ways in. He hunted on Sierra Pacific land, which is nice because they'll help you haul meat out if you call them and get it to the road.

Full of hoof rot, and limited access. Sierra pacific will help you BUT it's on their terms... You cannot count on them. If it works out great, but definitely plan on getting it out yourselves. Certainly some elk around but nowhere like it was 10 or 15 years ago, same goes for all of the SW gmus.

Good point. I give my card to everyone I see hunting on land I manage and will help out if I'm in the area, but I'm not gonna leave home at sundown if a hunter gave me a call then.  :dunno:

Does the good rot affect the meat ? As far as I have read ya cut  knee down off and leave it with the gut pile

A d as far as packing out never ever rely on anyone else we are good for a pack out

"They" say it doesn't effect the meat, but I'm skeptical. I know plenty of guys who killed hoof rot elk and ate it and no one has gotten sick and seems to taste fine. But the meat certainly looks different on elk with the disease advanced enough to start emaciating them. The cow I harvested two years ago had it and she was skinny, I never would have arrowed her if I knew but it was a quick deal in thick jacks.  Guys around here seem to agree that the heard has been cut in half, with no end in sight.  We called a bull in last year that couldn't put any weight down on his hind leg, let him limp away. If there is snow on the ground most tracks you run across will have blood in them. It's just sad.

Is it worth buying the Weyerhauser permit to gain access to their land?
