Coming back...
« on: May 18, 2017, 08:38:34 AM »
I'm coming back to bow hunting after a 15 year hiatus... the last time hunted I was using a Martin Maverick right handed bow I set up to shoot left handed and a LH Howatt Hunter recurve. Never had the money or interest to get into the technical side of the gear. However, I'm coming back and decided I want to get something at least left handed and compound. Most of my hunting is alpine spot and stalk mule deer hunting. Any ideas for bows and accompanying set ups? Arrows? I would like to stay under $800...is that even feasible now?

Shop the classifieds on this site, there were some quality left handed setups for well below your top end price in the last few weeks.

Look around I've see some good deals on lefty. Think I could get you a left handed Athens used for 450-600 set up minus arrows. Seen a few primes and a Hoyt in the same range.

Are all of these bows equal? I've obviously heard of Hoyt but the other ones I haven't. Are they all basically the same?

IMO, most of the 'common name' bows are all pretty decent anymore, theres not enough market share to produce crap and stay in business long, of course theres the "big names" such as Hoyt, Mathews, etc. I have a Mathews and love it, but the wife has a Diamond infinite edge (bowtech), thats not bad either, just a BIG difference in price points. First see what you like, then start shopping prices. And as others have said, seen a lotta bows on the ads lately, def check those out

Really most bows out are great but everyone has a brand they like. The smaller companies seem to be putting out great bows and normally at a lower price. The grip is different on most bows and that can tip some people toward or away. If you want to try a Athens get a hold of Mays archery over there, like I said shoot some bows before you get set on just the first deal. Give all the different companies a shot then look for a used one that you liked

Go to a shop and shoot some bows. Get a feel for the new technologies. Then you can buy a good bow used on here or on archerytalk.com

Here ya go brother. They've been in the business for many, many years and own the patents on much of the technology used by many of the big box brands. You won't be disappointed and will absolutely love the bow.
