Crawdad Mania - 2017
« on: June 16, 2017, 03:14:00 PM »
Okay a bit late here but let's do it again!

Same as last year largest crawdad measured from tip of the claw to tip of the tail and ending on the season closing October 31st.  Also, in keeping this honest only pics of live or uncooked hogcraws for the competition but any and all pics are welcome.

Winner with the largest Hogcraw gets... well I'm not sure yet but it's going to be cool.  BEER will be part of the prize :brew:

Post pics of your crawdad boils and we will vote at the end of the year for best boil.  The winner will get little surprise in the mail. :EAT:

Let the catching begin!

Should be a great year for Crawfish!!!!! Daughter keeps saying we need to get the pots out but the river has been way to high and turbulent. Best of luck to all  and may a Hogcraw find your trap! :IBCOOL:

Put out the pots last week, 97 the first night, 97 the second night. Most were in the 5" range, not counting the claw. I have pics, but I have never posted one, don't even know where to begin. A friend found a pot on the highway and gave it to me.  It out fished the pots (70 the first night, 50 the next)I had so I made two more using it as a proto type.

I have been out in various locations a total of 8 times and have 1 crawdad to show. I've been looking for rocks and structure, near a spillway in one instance. I use cat food, hotdogs, or chicken. Are they in just about every lake around? Am I missing something.  I'm a rookie at this so I just need to know if there's something obvious I'm not doing.

I can do that, Im off Monday, I will  take a few. There nothing special. I think its the (feelers) they used to keep the things from crawling out. Crawdads are way better at getting out of pots than shrimp, and its not close.

I tossed my home made trap off the side of the snake the other afternoon. Retrieved after a 20 hr soak. only got 15 and had to toss back 5 undersized. most were just over legal but did have a couple about 5". Used a trout from the freezer for bait, with a belly slice and a few body cuts. They didn't really tear up the trout. Thinking fresh may be better ?
How deep are you setting your traps ?

For bait use something more oily. I mostly use salmon heads or parts I get from the grocery store. They sell it to me for $1. Also, how long are you soaking your traps? I leave mine overnight while camping by the Snake river and usually have 10-40 in each trap by morning.

I use zip ties as the "feelers". I think I posted a picture in the Crawdad mania a couple of years ago. Definitely made a difference in the numbers I was pulling out.

I'll be putting on some of those "Feelers". Thanks for the Pic. I figured my #s were a bit low for a 20hr soak.
