Blacktail Questions...
« on: November 16, 2017, 12:33:44 PM »
Calling for help from the Blacktail gurus out here. I have been hunting elk and mule deer for about 15 years and just getting started hunting Blacktail. I have a targeted area in mind that I plan to focus my activity towards. Went out yesterday to get some boots on the ground and other than that haven't had a lot of time to put towards scouting. So, unfortunately, Im heading into the late season knowing that I will be using a couple of the first muzzle-loader days to do some combined scouting/hunting.

My question is how would you guys approach hunting a new area like I am. Would you plan to sit the clear cuts hoping something gets pushed into the open or spend your time still hunting through the denser woods? Any suggestions on how I should generally spend my day and what terrain to look for would be greatly appreciated!

As of today, still heavy rut activity, so concentrate on area’s you see doe’s and bucks will appear. As the season progresses, focus on high food source area’s as the bucks will shift from the rut to the fridge, to replenish before winter, and the colder days the better to post up on clear cuts. I'd try to find high ground on a clearcut, and  glass. Special attention to the tree line. I wouldn't  waist your time still hunting in an area your not familiar with.  Good luck.

Find a clear-cut with does in it. Then setup or spot and stock about 50 yards inside the tree line, next to the clear-cut.
I have had more luck searching for "core-zones" small clearings inside the timber where blacktail bucks bed.
Bring good binoculars and search for ears and tail twitches in these zones.

I'll go along with that advice... although after last weekend I don't know why anyone would listen to a word I have to say on the subject.
