Hmm. wolves and "undetermined" among the biggest killers of these caribou.

The people responsible for their introduction into the GYA should face criminal charges under the ESA for the effect on this endangered and doomed herd, not to mention all of the other ungulates.  :bash:

This is tragic in some many ways. I predict there will be none within five years, and environmentalists will use it as a cause célèbre, blaming the extinction on global warming.

I have heard it said on here and the fake environmental groups that it's all about habitat, I wonder where all those habitat people are today?

IDFG ran on the habitat blame game until they were force to admit, that yes it was wolves that had decimated the Lolo elk herd.

Why haven't they gone the route of captive breeding? It may be too late for that now but you would have thought it would have been considered.

The eventual demise of this herd was discussed by many of us prior to the adoption of the outrageous wolf plan for WA. We raised the question in WDFW wolf plan meetings and letters to the commission. One "endangered" species was obviously chosen over another.

The caribou is just not as valuable in the hierarchy of charismatic megafauna.  Perhaps if wal mart sold plush caribou dolls, or Disney made a movie with a cuddly caribou the masses would care.

Before wolves became an issue, I read an article, and I can't remember where, that if poaching of the caribou, could be controlled, then we would be able to eventually have another all OIL permit species.  Not now, obviously.

Meat Eater podcast with Steve Rinella has a good discussion with a biologist about the woodland caribou. A lot of great info.  http://www.themeateater.com/podcasts/episode-042-seattle-washington-steven-rinella-talks-with-wildlife-biologist-bart-george-along-with-ryan-callaghan-land-tawney-and-meateaters-janis-putelis/

You are correct, I specifically pointed this out to the commission and it was ignored. The sad thing is that wolves were not endangered, there were probably 60,000 wolves in North America when they imported the canadian wolves.

Exactly!  Just one more example of them worshiping predators, and not really caring about sound management at all!
