What diesel pickup to get
« on: July 21, 2017, 09:55:12 AM »
So at some point I am wanting to get a newer diesel one ton, but all the emissions crap on the motors these days make me worry about longevity.  I'm a Ford guy and they seemed to have figured out how to build diesels again with the 6.7L but they all take DEF.  I also know 7.3L is a great motor but I am looking for more modern amenities.  Where as the 2011-2012 Cummins 6.7L didnt yet have DEF.  So I am leaning towards the Cummins and would do deletes to the DPF and soot cooker etc.  Anyone have any good or bad advice for a 2011+ diesel.

Live where you can pull off all the BS off , then you will have a real truck. I have a ford and a dodge and with no emissions bs and they both walk away from the new ones.

I have a newer Dodge 3500 with all the bells and whistles, it'll pull more than I'll ever need it to for as long as I'll be here. I can't speak to the longevity yet, but honestly the DEF fluid is a non-issue to me. Throw a couple gallons in every 5K miles and that's it. I didn't buy it to race or be the first one to the top of the hill, I bought it to haul what I want where I want and be comfortable as heck doing so.

If your a Ford guy do your self a favor and just get a Ford because you wont be happy unless you do.  My hunting partner has the Ford disease and it is hard for those of use that don't have it to understand.  He had the 2001 7.3 and now has a 2015 6.7 and seldom either one has made the 500 mile round trip with out a repair or a tow but he swears they both were/are the best trucks ever made.  I am not saying they aren't good trucks it is just that some people develop a bias for some reason and often can't see past that bias.  Ford, Chevy and Dodge (now RAM) all make really good diesel pickups so it really has more to do with personal taste, preference and tolerance.

I am currently running a 2011 RAM 3500, 6.7 with some deletes, 105,000 miles and other than fluid changes and tires I haven't spent a dime on it, not even break pads.   Other people experiences may be different.

I wouldn't get hung up on having to add DEF every 5000 miles or so.  I think the increased stock power and fuel economy even out the expense of the DEF or that is what I have been lead to believe.  :twocents:

Ford out sells Dodge and Chevy by a country mile.
There are reasons why and it ain't because they are cheaper.

I just sold my 2010 6.4 F-350 with 250,000 miles on it.
It never broke.

Bought a new one in a 2017 without sitting in the cab or driving one.
They are straight up awesome.

I pull a 6 horse goose-neck and it roars over all the mountain passes from here to Salmon Idaho at normal driving speed.

The only problem I have with it is the truck and myself are both here in this armpit of a state.
Can't wait till it heads to the Rockies for good.

Go buy the truck you already know you want.

This is so uncommon, for Ford's.

Since I live in a county where emissions testing isnt required removing the EPA crap wouldnt be a big deal.  I was scorned by Chrysler once but I feel like the Ram division is a different animal.  The reason I was thinking 2011-2012 cummins is because they had yet to install DEF BS and that would be one less thing to remove.

I wouldn't concern yourself with the def. Like a few have said it's really not an issue anymore. It just depends on what you are looking for, what's more comfortable and or ergonomic. The big 3 have got things figured out for the most part although Cummins has the dpf figured out so much so that other manufacturers are buying from them( heavy truck). I've never been a dodge guy but if budget is an issue then a dodge is a great choice. They are pretty dang comfortable. I love fords but they are just too expensive for me. Duramax is a good motor but the chevy dealer in my town sucks bad enough I won't ever go back. Take a look at your needs and drive a few. If you live in a county with emissions you won't want to buy a vehicle with deletes. Good luck in your search.

I took the diesel plunge 2 years ago and bought a 6.7.  Haven't had one issue other than the lift was done wrong, not Fords Fault.   The power is awesome, fuel economy rubning 37 inch tires is great.  I have a F-250 and the ride sucks off the pavement! But I truly would not own another truck out there.

I'd walk before I drove a Chevy and Dodge just doesn't do it for me.  The DEF deal you just get used to filling every so often.  Maint is key and spendy but i think its
All worth it in the end.  i would not own the 6.0 or 6.4

I had a 08 cummins and don't think I will ever own another dodge, it's to bad because the engine itself is solid but everything else around it is junk

Rides like a cloud in pavement, I know, it put me to sleep after a long day of hunting. :chuckle: off road, well it's off road, who expects to ride like they're on pavement, I don't.

That's an unbiased opinion from a Mopar guy on this particular model of ford.  :chuckle:

Go Dodge!

I love my 2016 Duramax.   Just hit 30,000 miles with about 8,000 of those towing 14,500 lbs of 5th wheel with zero problems.  The ride and power are great.
