Guided Youth Upland Game Hunt
« on: July 31, 2017, 12:08:45 PM »
Does anyone on here know any details about the sponsored hunt(s) that were held last year for Upland Game?  I believe one was in Ellensburg and possibly the other in Yakima?  Could have even been Spokane.

I understand that one was held and the other was canceled due to lack of participation and/or signups?  If anyone has some info on who to contact or what's coming this year that would be very appreciative.  Trying to get my just now 13 year old to bag his first pheasant. Thanks

:jacked: I did this last year, and it was a hoot!  I am offering to take a youngster 15 years old or younger out for planted pheasant.  I will supply the birds and the bird dog.  You will need a parent or guardian, shotgun, ammo, safety vest, transportation, and appropriate attire.  I also require that you have completed Hunter Education.  I have enough birds for two kids.
Hunt hard and shoot straight!

Old Dog that sounds great to me.  My son has all the equipment and would love to have the opportunity and will be forever greatful.  Please send me any details and/or what schedule you plan to hold for this. Did you want him ask his friend to come along too?  They are 2 days apart and both 13.  Talk to you soon.

I tentatively have 3 kids lined up, so I am full.  If one of them doesn't work out I will re-open my offer.

Well, we did it!  Jasmine and I got this year's mentoring program started today with these two young men at Cherry Valley. The tall drink of water on my right is Hayden, and on my left is Lee. They are both 13, and their birthdays are only three days apart.

I am really beginning to dislike training at Cherry Valley. The cover looks thick, but it's thin underneath. That actually encourages the birds to run instead of flush, so Jasmine had a real hard time pinning them down.

The boys did great...well, except for their shooting.
One of Lee's birds got away from me, so he had to settle for just one. Jasmine tried to point it, but she couldn't pin it down. I sent Lee in to flush the bird, but after only a few moments I also went in to help. Lee saw the grass moving as the bird was trying to run, and was in the right place to cut it off, so he had a real good shot.. However in all the excitement he didn't get the safety off right away. He did take a shot that was in reasonable range, but he missed.

Jasmine was able to produce both birds for Hayden. The first bird flushed into some power lines, so Hayden, without any help from his dad or me, passed on the shot. Good job Hayden! Jasmine held an excellent point on the next bird, but again when Hayden went in to flush it the bird started running around in the tall grass. Jasmine stayed steady through us thrashing around for a couple of minutes. I finally released her, because we couldn't find the bird. She went 10 feet and it busted...finally! Hayden was in perfect position, but... he missed.

All in all I think it was a pretty good day for everyone. To top it off Lee's dad Steve gave me a half gallon of some outstanding homemade apple cider, and some beef jerky!!

Hunt hard and shoot straight!

Nice picture Larry.  Thanks again for taking the boys out.  They were both very pleased that they got an opportunity to hunt.  We will continue to practice and get ready for the next hunt.  Myself and Scott really appreciated you taking the time and effort to help these young men become better hunters.  Jasmine was a joy for them to both hunt over so she got some practice in too.

Enjoy the rest of the season.  Things are just getting started!
