Opening Day Bear (Greenwater)
« on: August 16, 2017, 09:58:37 AM »
Helped my best bud harvest his first bear yesterday for the Aug 15th Opener. (He's a member here and gave me permission to post for him). Not the biggest bear in my secret spots  8) but a good eating / first bear! Longest spot to shot  on Bears I've been a part of. From Spot to Trigger pull had to of been 30 min. (Felt like 3 hours!) When they're on the smaller side they get lost in the brush!  :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:  He had a 70 yard chest shot, hit a few inches high.... Center punched between the eyes! Quick Expire that way..

Lot's of berries! 1 down few more to go!

Congratulations to both of you.

Question, for future reference sake.  With a shot like that (square between the eyes), did the bear drop dead there, or run for a while??  How soon from shot to expiration??

Thanks

Thanks for the story and photo, my dad always preferred to get younger bear because they are usually better eating, trophy status depends on what your goals of the hunt might be! I'm willing to bet that will be his best bear hunt ever!

I've harvested a few bears, and have been a part of / helped others get bears, and I always say "a bear is a bear big ones are great, but the smaller one is still a trophy".

This bear was shot with a 300 WSM 180 Gr Noslers, the bear dropped instantly and did not move one bit. 2 Second expire. However, I do not recommend shooting bears in the head, when I'm helping people or hunting bears myself. It's a small area to hit, ruins the skull (witch is part of the trophy and we owe it to the Animal to keep the skull for display) and It can get ugly if you don't center punch the skull. I've heard of head shot bears running off and never to be found....The ideal Bear shot in my experience is a frontal chest shot. They go down hard and expire quick.

2.5 year old sow (no cubs / dry) with a beautiful Coat! Nice big sticky patch of sap from peeling / rubbing trees, that will tan out. But he was really happy his first didn't have a bad coat.

One reasonable rule of thumb is width of forepaw in inches roughly correlates to length in feet
As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.

Alright good to know. I was measuring from front paw to back paw thinking wow these are small. Probably decent sized bears
