Blown spark plug
« on: August 25, 2017, 07:02:41 PM »
So my wife pulled into the parking lot to drop off her phone that is broken(different story). Said she heard a bang so turned off the car and called me.

When I open the hood I see the spark plug has blown out into the coil and broke the coil off. Don't know a whole lot about cars but did a little googling to research the issue. When I inspected the plug I assumed I would see damage but the threads looked normal so was thinking maybe it was loose and just backed out. Bought a new plug and coil hoping that would work. But met some resistance like the internal threads are damaged even though it looked normal looking into the cylinder. So called for a tow to the shop

So what am I looking at for a repair? Car is a 2001 Mazda Tribute so not worth a lot

Had something similar happen on my 5.4L. Spark plug backed out and blew out the last few threads. I opted to have to head removed and retapped off a bench. I think cost was $1,500 about 8-9 years ago.

Seems to be a problem with a few Fords?
Was it a particular engine as Dye7barrel's 5.4?

They're able to helicoil with engine still in car.Remembered it was only about $3 - $400
Really not too big of a deal.

you can go to orilleys  auto zone and buy a cheap kit that was put out for this very reason.make sure valves are closed first, its way better than a helicoil.watch a you tube video on fixing ford blown out spark plug.even if not a ford it will be the same.

Cost me  $360 a month ago... They had it done in 1 day... And yes, it was a Ford.

Really common in the Ford 5.4's. Sometimes they can be screwed back in, sometimes they need the inserts installed.

Price is all over the board. The quality tool kit and inserts are expensive. We do them for around $800.00. Seen it anywhere from $300-$1000.00
