getting closer!
« on: July 05, 2017, 10:11:36 AM »
And this guy is getting me excited..  I dropped my 3yr old brit off at the trainer for summer camp and there are bobs EVERYWHERE in SE Nebraska.  More pheasants than usual as well.  Reports from SD say it's been dry there, so time will tell how the SD Pheasant numbers look.  Here in CO we had a mild winter, but the spring has been a little on the dry side.  There should be good cary over and hopefully the blue quail and pheasants hatches fare well.  It's been a little dry from TX into Southern KS, but there should be good quail numbers considering many old timers said they don't ever remember as many quail as they had last year.  30-40 covey days in TX were not uncommon.   If anyone is looking to make a road trip, don't forget about the middle Midwest.  You can be in bird country in about the same time it takes to get to SD.  Here in Denver,  a 3-5 hr drive gets you into some of the best bird hunting in the country, and 8 hrs puts you into SD, Eastern NE and KS, and well into TX bob white country.  Plus, KS has a 4 Pheasant per day limit, with ridiculous amounts of public land.  For those thinking about making a trip and not sure where to go, don't forget the middle Midwest.

Edit.  I just got off the phone with a landowner in the panhandle of Texas.  He said last year was the best year anyone ever remembers for quail. 30-40 coveys a day was the norm.  He said they have had rain in the panhandle and this year looks even better than last year.

Couldn't stand it any longer. We Just booked a 3 day quail hunt and added a 4th day to shoot hogs, in the TX Panhandle.  I plan on hunting my way down and back.  I think it's going to be a blast.

Sounds like it will be a blast. I'm jealous! Nothing like hunting quail over a good dog!
I hunt, therefore I am.... I fish, therefore I lie.

Ughhhh!!!  SD pheasant roadside counts show tPheasant numbers down 45% from last year.  That's HUGE!!  I talked to my trainer and he said SD not worth the trip for pheasants this year.   Drought has really hurt bird numbers.
