2017-2018 waterfowl season
« on: October 03, 2017, 04:27:57 AM »
Thought I would start a thread about the upcoming season. Anyone been out scouting? Excited to try out any new gear? For me, I plan to scout this weekend and I am looking forward to trying out my new breathable waders. I think the dogs are ready for some duck action too!

I refreshed the decoy spread this year and should be getting a new bang stick in a couple of weeks.  We went out on the youth opener and the dog was remarkably better despite the fact I haven't really worked with her, so we're good to go.

What kind of scattergun are you looking at?

M3500 although I whiffed at a chance to pick up a better gun for the same price at the WWF banquet last Saturday.

I was out scouting on Sunday.  There are a few snows around already.  Duck numbers are pretty low still.

All residential ducks around here, some high flying geese starting to come through though.

Water level just started creeping in on my property yesterday. Counted 21 ducks on the place yesterday. Nice flock of honkers just flew over the house. One goal this year is to shoot a duck and a goose from the deck. Just went out and counted 40.

I just picked up my 18 mo old chocolate lab from training this weekend and she's more fired up than me although presently sleeping on my feet in the office. Now I need to get her birds, birds, birds this year.

my first scouting trip will be Thursday.   I have one pond I watch often as it's visible from the road.  I saw more ducks on it this morning but don't know if they just flew in from another pond or they are beginning to trickle down.   Last year the early ducks were down here by now.

New avian x mallards to tryout this season. I also have seen a slight increase in ducks including a flock of woodies at a local lake

Local geese are thick around Sultan, don't know where to hunt them though.   :(

Oh yeah, Scoters have been thick for a couple of weeks around Decatur, flocks of 200+ birds.

Man am I looking forward to it.  Will be hitting some of my local flooded holes for the opener as they all are holding a lot of birds right now.  Take out the locals, then move down to potholes area for the second opener.

I went scouting for a bit last Saturday.  I am glad I did!  There was no water in the area I was hoping to setup in on opening day.  I am going back out to make sure plan b is good this weekend.

I am going to finish brushing the blind and do some scouting as they are starting to cut corn up here. Haven't seen many ducks yet and after early goose the honkers have moved.
