Ever had you deks shot at??
« on: October 10, 2017, 01:41:22 PM »
I have had deer hunter take potshots a couple of times and once it must have been yote hunter ( 06 and 223 casing found and turned over to GW) lucky for me I wasn't in the line of fire and they was poor shots never hit a thing. Had many times when someone snuck  up on them and I had to let them know they was deks and please don't shoot them :chuckle: Guess my little puddle spread looks pretty good  :hello:

An archery guy shot one of my Montana elk decoys in the butt once. Glad I wasn't behind it. And a really poor shot for being about 20 yards away.  :chuckle:

Years ago, out by Coulee City, my father and brother had their field goose dekes peppered by buck shot from a white Jeep Cherokee that was passing by. The vehicle drove past, turned around and came back then shot at their spread. They were both in layout blinds in the decoys. Several silos had holes in them but thankfully that was all.
I had some goof balls putting a stalk on my dove dekes once on public ground. They looked embarrassed when I called them out.  :chuckle:

I put an awesome stalk on a deke once that must have floated free of someone's spread as it was all by itself and there wasn't another hunter within probably a mile or more.  I didn't shoot it though.

That's funny. I know a hunter who shot at an elk decoy.

I heard a story that a young man was goose hunting solo. Truck pulls up and cracks a shot at a bird standing higher than the others. Turned out a day later they found the kids body. He has a deke on his layout. Idk of its true or not.

A couple times.    One was by one of those duck sluicers, and another was by two teenage boys with a .22

My Nana told me this story about my dad after he passed away.  She ended up being a single mom to two boys living in government housing in Freeport, Texas.  My dad loved the outdoors and over the years of hunting and fishing the marshes he had found about a dozen ratty duck decoys.  He had a single shot Sears 12 gauge and was set up duck hunting with his dekes and was around 13 at the time.  This is one year before he ran away with the circus, two years before he ran away to spend the summer working on a fishing boat in the Gulf of Mexico, and two and a half years from being placed in military school.  A jump shooter decided to start sluicing my dad's decoys, prompting my dad to give him an angry "warning shot".  The sluicer had managed to ruin about half of his hard-earned collection of decoys.
Dreams are forever on the mind, realization in the hands.

Yeah- that was my dad and myself. I am pretty sure it was a rifle that he shot with. Hit one full body decoy and a few silhouettes. It was scary- we had decoys set up around the blinds, he could have very easily been aiming at those...
The s#!tty part was that once we jumped up out of the blinds, he peeled out and started grabbing gears down the highway.
I often wonder if he ever thinks about what he did? He doesn't know if his shot hurt or killed anyone...
Up until that point I wouldn't bring a cell phone out on a hunt. Now I won't hunt without carrying one.

It was around 1996 I had some kids sneak up on my spread and cut loose before I could say anything.  They got 3 shots off each before they could hear me yelling.  They peppered close to a dozen decoys.  They ended up replacing them.  This was the only time this has happened to me other than hunting parterner peppering decoys at times.
I loose 1 to 2 decoys per season due to low flying birds.
Cut em!
It's not the shells!  It's the shooter!

Yes, but it's usually from someone in my hunting group.
