Last day muzzy spike
« on: October 15, 2017, 08:25:32 AM »
was out opening & shot under a bull by misjudging distance, got out once during the week but Friday morning I went out but was late & they saw me & tore out of the area since it was getting light, went back in evening & posted up. saw then coming in from other side so I gathered my gear & ran across the field but they beat me to the field so I dropped in the cut grass (3") I ranged them & it was 430 @ 6pm. I belly crawled but figured I'd never close the distance in time. I counted them & thought to myself, "there's only 6, there were 15 this morning, where's the rest?" so I stayed put & kept scanning the whole area. after about 15 minutes I saw some spikes & cows coming in from another direction & stayed laying down but turned to face them & kept ranging them as they came closer 150, 140, 127, when the closest 1 got to 102 I took aim & fired, couldn't see through the smoke but heard it hit. he ran in a semi-circle & tried to follow the rest out of the area but he began to falter & fell just out of the cut field, my 1st muzzy elk. I usually hunt archery but was busy with my racing season so didn't even get tags until 2 days before muzzy season.

Well done! It's not easy to get an elk with a muzzy. Good for you!

the gun is a Traditions .50 cal that I picked up @ a gunshow from a friend of a friend for $100, don't know a whole lot about it, used a 275 grain maxi-bullet ahead of 105 grains of Pyrodex RS. with tribal customs being what they are, I gifted the whole animal to a family that lost a mom, daughter, aunt, grandmother to help feed all of the guests who came for her services, I only have the teeth, skull, recovered bullet & tag to show for my efforts, not complaining. just hope my wife or son connects in their seasons for our freezer.

Nice spike and that's a heck of a tradition man. Good thing to see people taking care of each other.

Thanks Don_D, I'm proud of some of our traditions that promote helping each other out, my son is hoping to get his 1st elk & as tradition expects that he give his 1st away, he has been asking different families if he connects do they want some elk meat.
