GMU 655, 654 or 653
« on: October 16, 2017, 08:23:24 AM »
Anyone hunt Anderson island?  I spent 3 days at capitol forest and only saw a rabbit. scouted numerous times and saw tracks and poo... I sat out at 4 am till 10 then creeped through the woods with absolutely no sign of life. not sure I want to go back so I'm looking into east of Buckley (654 or 653) and noticed Anderson  Island is any deer. I'm just looking for my first tag really. i plan on going out this weekend and looking for a place close to Tacoma. have 4 days off for rut in November so i might go back to cap if anyone has had luck and willing to share a location. i was off d-1000 and d1100.

cheers

Tough getting access this time of year.  It is pretty much privately owned property.  I have found that a person has much better success if they go out around planting time and try to secure access.  Deer hunting isn't bad on Anderson.

I've hunted 653 most my life for elk, I've maybe seen 2 or 3 nice bucks is all.  And 2 were in the dark, just not a good deer unit in my opinion.
“In common with”..... not so much!!

Thanks all. Cap forest wasn't as bad as I was assuming it would be.  wanted to hunt this weekend but do not want to drive back down. I do have an elk tag so I might check it out next weekend.
Any area you could recommend?

I hunted Saturday and Sunday in the south end of 654 and did not see a single deer. I hunted high and low, not even a lot of sign.

Most bucks are almost completely nocturnal until its time to breed.  That time isn't here yet.  You should be seeing does though.

I'd stick with Cap. Forest.  There is plenty of deer there.  Be patient, it will happen.  Temperatures in the 50s and above have the deer relaxing in their beds for most of the day.  Caloric requirements are minimal - they're all fat and happy.  The rut clock is ticking.......

Enjoy your time in the woods.  Rain's coming very soon, and hunting in the rain......well, it's not quite as nice as hunting in the sun (extreme understatement), but those are the best BT days to hunt.
