Don't forget to leave your valuables home or take them with you
« on: October 16, 2017, 12:22:47 PM »
I was reminded again yesterday when I pulled up to a DNR gate to see the canopy hatch and side window smashed out of a truck to be aware of what I leave in the truck. There was a rifle case on the back seat. That was the first mistake, but also doesnt speak much for the brains of the thief. Front console and glove box were worked through. Not sure what was in the back but they left the game cart. Didn't find the owner back there.

For now on I'll leave the glove box and console open. I don't leave anything of value in the truck or in sight. I'll probably take my registration and anything with my address with me. Careful out there!

What area was this in?  Just wondering as I see you are close to me and I hunt local.  If it doesn't give your spot away, that is!

I believe I know exactly where you were. That was my friends truck that was broken into at the gate. He did leave some items that he shouldn’t have. The thief  took some odd items out of his vehicle but left the game cart and an axe. I park in that location a lot and have only had my gas cap tampered with.  I live less than 10 minutes from that spot.

Not suggesting, but theoretically speaking, if a few stings were to happen and some redneck Justice, then the deterrent might way heavier on their minds than the current risk.

What they do is use cell phones and have one guy follow the hunter and the other guy hits the truck.  They are getting sophisticated.  A sting with a guy going in early and hiding watching the gate would be great way to defeat that though.

When I bought a used canopy, it didn't come with keys.  I was going to order some, but then I realized I would be better off just leaving it open as the keys wouldn't prevent theft but would hopefully at least prevent a broken window.

Thievery is so horrible, I spend way to much time thinking about how to secure my stuff while hunting that it really puts a cloud over the fun of having a great hunt coming up.

I hate thieves, scum of scum. When you don't hunt near home it's about impossible to not have some valuable stuff in the truck while out hunting. I always leave my empty gun case folded-in-half or open, to hopefully remove the temptation of an easy gun, but there's still other things in there. Did I mention I hate thieves!?

A couple years ago me and Lakeland came back to our trucks to find they had been broke into. They threw a rock through my passenger window . It continued through my driver side window, and put a softball size dent in Jake's truck.   >:(
I hate thieves and liars.

The creeps that hit our camp in 364 broke and threw stuff , stoled food n clothes , seemed they took only what they needed , guy in Naches told me , well what's that sound like to you ? , He smiled and whispered,,, natives , and everyone knows who it is , but that's the way things are , people have entered desperate times , us who work for a living ,, well we are all wearing Robinhood hats and don't know it till the smooth criminals show up, sad but true ... :yike:

For me, it helps to try to remember to look at my vehicle from the outside to inside before leaving it to see what COULD look valuable to a thief. Even though I know that it isn't that valuable at all. Example - my Gym bag....Shorts, t-shirt, towel...not that exciting BUT if the bag is left in plain sight and is zipped up, then I might end up with a busted window.   >:(

A friend called me last night, he got his window broken out at the same gate as my original post. They took a few dollars in change from the cupholder
