Lyman trade rifle .54 cal recoil!!
« on: October 16, 2017, 05:17:40 PM »
So I went to the Range on Sunday to try out a used Lyman trade rifle, I purchased a while ago. I was using Hornady great plains 425 grains with 95 grains of powder. My question is the way the stock is on this gun and a metal buttplate it digs in my shoulder pretty bad. Am I using to heavy of a bullet? does any one else have this issue? I was thinking about a recoil pad but with that curved buttplate I dont know if it would work? Any suggestions? Thanks Jason

You could get one of those slip over the stock recoil pads

Check some of these out... they will not be perfect because of the your curved stock - but they do work

Keep shooting muzzleloaders - They are a blast!!

I definitely need to do something. I was hoping I could find one for a curved butt plate. I haven't had much luck yet.?

With a 54cal, you don't need anything bigger than a patched round ball. Thats a big heavy bullet.

425 Hornady and 110 grains.  I never had a problem with recoil.  Is the plate the problem?
MAGA!  Again..

Move the stock to your armpit.  It will curve around your shoulder that way.
Hunt hard and shoot straight!

Slip on recoil pad...I like Simms but there are many good ones out there.   The old red Pachmeyer (cheap model not decelerator) is a little stiff, but it will flex fit fine with minimal back pressure.  I'm not into changing my shooting form or self punishment if I can quickly change/add something to help me shoot better.

The plate digs in my shoulder in the wrong spots . I kept trying to adjust the stock .

No matter what! if you can not make it comfortable - it is not going to shoot well for you... I would really urge you to try a skip on - it will contour to your shoulder and curved butt stock when you bring it up

Got some round balls . No more recoil problems! Those 425 grainers where kicking pretty good. Jason
