FYI to 340 hunters (wolfs)
« on: October 16, 2017, 05:30:22 PM »
I spent the weekend on the jeep trails and fresh snow around Quartz.  No joke there were over 400 wolf tracks cutting the jeep trails.  Looks like they are hunting elk from the track.  I have also never seen so little elk track in there.  I have almost 20 years playing around in that timber, things have changed in the 340 unit for sure.

I live next to 340 and spend a lot of time hiking riding back there. I noticed wolves coming in there about 5 years ago. Of course WDFW denied it despite photos. The elk and deer number are way down as you know. Look at how the reduced cow tags in 340 342 346. Watch what the wolves do to the Yakima herd in the winter time in the feeding areas.

You can thank the pro wolf anti hunting groups like conservation NW.

Wow, by this weekend there will be 400 boot tracks up there, maybe that will push they wolves away at least temporarily.

Ziptie, I already have plans in that area in the next couple of days.  Curious, did you note what elevation the snow starts?

Saw wolf tracks in the 368 during muzzy season. :(  Had the elk all scattered and spooky.

The wolves have decimated the elk and deer in 335. Saw one wolf up close and heard several packs of wolves howling at different points throughout the day. It's almost scary how little game is left in 335 due to the wolves.

I heard my first 340 wolf in 2014. They've had of been there longer though

In regard to ribkas comment-

Unfortunately, I think there's going to be a higher wolf presence in the Norse Peak now that all of it is burned. Easier for the wolves to eat the elk and very few deer we have.

In 2013 I drew modern bull for Peaches. Hunting the draw on the west side of Peaches Ridge one day down in the thick stuff, I came across three different bone piles of elk down there. Thought that was odd. Then I came across what I thought was the largest coyote turd I had ever seen in my life. Then later that afternoon, I had worked my way north towards the Taneum area. Dropped down some more and just started working my way back towards Quartz, when I heard the strangest Yipping I had ever heard from a Coyote, or so I thought again.
Two days later, was hiking back in before light. It was just getting light enough to start to see when I stopped to look at an area about 1000 yards ahead. All of a sudden, three bulls come running out of the trees, stop, then run right back in where they came out. A few seconds later, they came running back into the open and headed downhill out of site. Thought this was strange. Then, from the area they ran out of, heard two wolves start howling. Then a third one started howling some distance away to the north. The one in the distance then started with that funny yipping I heard a couple days before. Kind of makes the hair stand up on the back of the neck.

Why? They have no reason to fear humans.
