Spring Bear 2018
« on: November 19, 2017, 11:45:24 AM »
I haven't saw the regs for 2018 spring bear yet.  I believe it says they come out in November.  Anyone know anything?

I asked about spring bear tags last week, this is what she said at Wdfw.

Hi Jerry,
As of right now the applications are due to go on sale Jan 2, 2018 – Feb 28, 2018.
We are waiting for the species manager to get the information out to customers via email and most likely a media News Release.
They will be posting the hunt choices to the dfw.wa.gov web page soon, or at least by the time submittals begin in Jan.
If there are changes in the next couple of weeks, I will let you know.

Take care
“In common with”..... not so much!!

I believe they adopted exactly what was proposed. If you look up the WAC (232-28-286), it was updated a while back, so you can see what the changes are.

The link below showed 25 Monroe tags. Did they change it?

Perspective Rookie Bear hunter here.
Questions
#1 Why is spring bear a special permit. Is it easy bear hunting? Shooting fish in a barrel?
#2 is that the only areas that have spring bear available? No 335,510,667,328,336,346 or 505?
#3 is spring bear just to deal with a problem Bear population in a specific area?
#4 any info You would like to share with a guy looking into becoming a bear hunter.
Seahawks
Hunting
Fishing
In That order

I understand that legal areas for the westside hunts are generally limited to whatever the WDFW works out with the timber companies--generally speaking, what general part of the unit has the Skagit hunt been in?  Wasn't able to find any of the maps online.  I am just trying to gauge roughly how far of a drive it would be for me.

If this is correct, which i'm sure it is, there are only 826 spring bear tags available for the entire state of Washington??  There are 4,675 available in Oregon.  I know practices for hunting bears are different from Oregon to Washington.  Is the success percentage high enough to justify giving out so few tags, or are there just not a lot of bear around?  In a "good" unit in Oregon you can see handfuls of bear in a single day, weather permitting.  Oregon has outlawed running dogs and baiting, so maybe the population has gone through the roof.  Just seems strange to see that much discrepancy in tag numbers for neighboring states...

We have a ton of bears in WA, probably one of the highest density states for bear.

WDFW just loves predators  :dunno:

I really wish they would go to a state wide spring season. Not sure why most of them are tailored as depredation hunts seeing as densities are pretty solid state wide and the number of hunters that peruse them is relatively small. Most times it’s a just in case tag. Totally agree KF, I had read an article a couple years ago in I believe Northwest or game and fish. Said that Wa had the highest black bear densities in the lower 48. Have to look at some back issues to check.

I'll go up there with you H20, it's right up the road from me. I'll be putting in for it also.  I also like some of the East Side hunts.

Can I apply now with my 2017 license which is still good or do I need to buy the 2018 bear tag or bear combo?

Also...again being serious I bet us just to the south will make it harder to draw. Skagit is the closest unit....so....sorry.

And it's Northie......sheesh.

Fine.  Try and piddle in my sunshine puddle.  When I draw just be prepared for a "neener neener".

Ps. Good luck on the draw.

I drew the first year I put in, two years ago. Didn't tag out, only two tags filled that year from what I heard. All's I'm saying is, sometimes a guy gets lucky!

A lot of guys don’t report so don’t trust those numbers. First year I drew there was one bear reported killed mine. When I know at least 4 others that killed bears.
