Peaches Ridge Bull...my first
« on: November 21, 2017, 12:23:00 PM »
Totally pumped! On the 7th day of my 2017 E. Washington PR Bull hunt, I filled my first bull tag!

As all of you know drawing a bull tag is the start.  I moved hear 15 years ago from Missouri, and not knowing the importance of the preference points.  I hadn’t started buying them until several unsuccessful hunts in the Any Elk GMUs.  So in June seeing my Congratulations letter I was pumped!

My hunt started with me looking for a new area to hunt due to the Norse Peak Fire burning the area I was familiar with.  During the closure I scouted several areas in the 346 and 336 GMUs finding elk high on the edges where the units touch each other.

So I thought I had a plan... not wanting to rough it, I planned on pulling my travel trailer up in there. My hunting partner wanted to hunt the last days of Mule deer, so we planned on getting up on the Wednesday before the end of the deer season.  As the week of the hunt arrived, the weather forecasts projected heavy snow that weekend, an I became fearful of getting my trailer snowed-in. So, plan C became a lower hunt in an area I had to learn quickly.   The end of the deer season allowed my to scout w/the opportunity to harvest a Buck, but the deer season ended without either of us seeing a legal buck.

My elk season started on Monday and by Thursday, I was so close to moving to another area.  I knew Elk were in the area, fresh sign, tracks in mud, tracks in fresh snow, and a few shots heard.  I just wasn’t seeing them. So I made the decision to stay at camp where I was enjoying my time at Elk Camp with several new friends. I spent all of Friday and Saturday hiking into the steepest drainages hoping to find a bull hanging out. Saturday night came and I had the guys asking if I was even going out on Sunday (my last day before returning to work)?  I told them of course I was but planning on leaving by noon.

Sunday morning, I had to catch a ride back up to where I had left my truck the morning before hiking the drainage back to camp.  After being dropped of, I spent the first 30min out of the timber where I thought I might catch a bull heading off the top,of the Ridge.  After 30min I angled into the timber and slowly moving further down the Ridge.  I caught my bull heading for the top, with his plans to bed down on the steep north side. He gave me a 60yd shot with a 200g .338 ballistic silvertip.

I got very lucky to be where I was.  Even better he dead ran straight back down towards the road 100 yards.  This allowed me to load him in a truck whole and take him back down to camp. Very thankful to the guys at camp for helping and sharing this great experience.
