Basin ice report?
« on: January 10, 2018, 02:40:27 PM »
Just curious what this warmer weather and wind is doing to the ice in the Potholes/Moses Lake area? If any of you eastside guys care to give a report I'd appreciate it, just determining if I want to bring my boat or pack in this weekend. PM's welcome, thanks!

I can't speak for the Moses/ Potholes area, but around Spokane I wouldn't try to get out on any lakes.
It didn't even get below freezing a couple nights ago.

they were out ice fishing on Moses yesterday.  I didn't see anyone this morning but I think that's because the fishing is slow.

Basin had iced up ok until late last week. Combo of warmer temps, some sunshine and breezes has been making the ice retreat some. Haven't been out to potholes this week but other water is opening up around me

It is snowing like a sun of a gun here in east wenatchee and the forecast is for 4-8 inches here and an inch or two in the basin. That should help move the birds

I hope I am not thread jacking, but I have my first duck hunt scheduled for Saturday out of Moses lake. What does the different ice and snow mean for hunting?

Ice can be good because it limits the areas where waterfowl can and want to land. When all water is open, they can be spread out all over but ice concentrates them. Snow can be good or bad depending on the amount as it covers feed in some of the fields.

Thanks. I'm really not sure what to expect. This is my first duck hunt other than jump shooting them off ponds while pheasant hunting and my first hunt with a guide so I am trying to learn as much as possible.

If its with a guide you should be in for a good time. Enjoy, observe and ask questions
