Shot out my 243 :updated:
« on: January 17, 2018, 04:47:29 PM »
Pretty sure my 243 is shot out.  26" rem sps varmint barrel. 2732 rounds now.  Haven't gotten a good group out of her for the last 60 rounds. Rifle has been cleaned and refouled. Everything has been checked and all is
properly torqued. Scope was changed as well.  Haden't checked the lands for a while..... Eroded .187" since new. Had more free bore than I like when I got it,  was a good barrel while she lasted.  Going with a rem/age setup to replace it. Now to decide which cartridge, prob go with30" 1:7 243ai since I have so many 6mm bullets and components
Also played with seating depth
This was a 1/3-1/2 moa gun (<1/4" a few times) up until recently.
Free bore is just over .6" long from case mouth.

As an idea to kick around before you order a new prechambered barrel, take a look at maybe doing a 6mm Creedmoor instead.

👍 The 6mm Creedmoor is a option. Well done on spending enough time on the trigger to shoot out a barrel. Everyone yaps about barrel life but VERY, VERY FEW, ever will shoot a barrel out in their life time. Especially from start to finish. At today's powder prices it took you about $500.00 bucks in powder alone to shoot that barrel out. Not to mention, brass, bullets and primers. Most couldn't afford to shoot a barrel out, let alone find the time to send 2700 plus rounds down range.

There's a special place for "Dead" barrels!!💥👍💥

this is the 2 nd 243 I shot out. Last one was a rem 770 with 3200+ rounds
im pretty excited about it really. When I bought this rifle from RedHawk I new the barrel wouldn't last long anyway.  I thought about going 6 cm but I have so much brass for 243.  Still undecided. May just go 7wsm. So many options and so little time lol

The AI would be the way to go, depending on life and condition of your standard 243 brass. The joy of the AI is the simplicity of fire forming brass. I have had 3 AI's (243, 257 Roberts, and 25/06). All were every bit as accurate shooting full house fireform loads as much as shaped cases👍

I have old to new brass. Also aneal regularly. Neck size only.
Had one lot of Hornady brass for my first 243 that I anealed every loading and it lasted just over 100 loadings before necks got too thin and run out became a problem

That's pretty amazing case life. Brass life is another benefit of the AI. Typically 2-3 times

never had any other lots last like that one did. Got lucky Hornady brass I had more recently was not so great.
The 243ai has been on my list for some time.

If you plan on shooting a AI. You may give the Hornady Hydro-Forming dies a try. Saves barrel life and you can shoot full house loads right out of the gate. Some of the Hornady Shooting team guys swear by them. I talked to one of their shooters and he said his hydro formed virgin cases. Are match accurate at 1000 yards on their first loading.

Better than "Tack Driver" we are talking like "Lights Out"...

Yep... Most just run their sucks...

Shot a boat load of 1/2 MOA or smaller groups with Hornady brass. To each their own! Most will run their yaps all day but they won't run their wallets. Not hard to figure out who drops the coin on Firearms and who just yaps about it or is trying to make a "Little" coin on firearms..😘

I think its somewhere between a "Tack driver" and a "Needle threader" ☺
Ackley's can be amazingly accurate, given a good barrel from the start! A mediocre barrel will still yield mediocre accuracy..

I think I'm going to go with at least one of these barrels in 30"
