Idaho elk unit 6

Been about 5 years since hunted unit 6. Mainly concentrated south of fernwood. Was kind of curious if they are still logging the crap out of that country.

If you thought it was bad 5 years ago it's absolutely ridiculous now. Loggers have most the elk ran outta the cuts by 3 in the morning. It has made the elk so nocturnal. Unit 6 won't last long especially with 600 bulls taken in the unit alone just last year. Well 2016.

600 bulls that’s nuts!

Take a look at unit 4!  They had even more killed!!!  I honestly don't know when they shoot then because I never see anything hanging, just big camps with guys standing around.

ABSOLUTELY heavy logging in 4 and 6.  Really makes it tough to commit to a area within these units.  Past well known haunts are wrecked!  I get it but it sure makes it tough to commit to a area no doubt.

Ya there was at least 12 guys in the camping spot i was at and we were the only ones with an elk in 10a and I only saw 2 other dead bulls the whole time

Well I was planning on going back this year. I may have to take a drive over and see if all my honey holes still have timber. Last I was over there I was driving early morning and was trying to find one of the spots I always gets answers. Come to find out once daylight arrived. I was sitting smack dab in it. It was hard to tell because the clear cut was huge.

I was thinking about hitting 6 this year for archery if I am not drawn for any quality tags here in Washington.  There are reports of the herd improving in this area after wolves killed lots of them and tough winters.

Not to be harsh just because im straight forward, whoever gave ya that info obviously doesn't spend enough time in he unit. It has to much country that is innaccessible Wich means wolves run it because humans are not accesible to control the problem. And the country that is accessible is totally over ran with logging and other hunters. I've never seen so many people hunting off 4 wheelers in my life.  The herds use to be 20 head of elk. One good mature bull and a few raghorns rest cows. Now it's 3 cows one bull. It ticks me off that all of us are paying for these tags and fish and game is just throwing numbers out there to get people to buy the tags. I bet if you actually did a real elk survey for the state it would be under half of what they actually call for. And for us as hunters we are dropping the ball giving them what they want every year.

Once all the elk move down the wolves do too and then the trappers can make an impact. The word I'm hearing is that the wolf trappers are doing well this season in north Idaho, that is good for elk and elk hunters.

I know some of the guys who trap that area and they seem to be getting less than what they were before, I think the wolves are getting a little trap wise.

I agree.  And the elk have gotten a lot wolf wise.  A great thing.  I always figured there would be a learning curve to re-learn how to co-habitate.

Yes, there are still elk up there but their “mannerisms” and historic vocalization norms have changed with the intro of the Canadian wolf species, particularly when a pack moves into a drainage. The challenge lies within years of watching/experiencing the changes and adjusting a hunters tactics as needed.
