Best budget trail cam?
« on: January 31, 2018, 09:07:19 PM »
Looking to get a low-ish cost trail camera to monitor my chickens and see what if anything is looking for an easy meal.  Never bought one before and not sure what brands/models are worth buying.

Budget is under $150, if possible.  Don't need super high quality photos, but it needs to be recognizable for say coyote vs neighbor dog at night.  Be nice to have an IR flash instead of white light for night photos but I can live with either.  Video is nice but not necessary.  Lag between detection and taking photos should be short enough to catch typical suburban/rural predators.  Not worried about theft on my property.

These Browning Strike Forces are far and away my favorite camera I’ve had. Reliable, great battery life, enough features to be customizable but not too many that makes it unnecessarily complicated to set up. I’ve got some older, 2016 models and the new ones are a big more spendy but look even better.

Bushnell Aggressor Low Glow is in your price range.  I believe it's tough to beat dollar for dollar.

Just go with the old Bushnell Bone collector, Cheaper, great battery life lasts a long time.

Check dicks sporting goods for some wildgame innovation cameras.  I bought some for $36 each and no complaints.

I did that very thing.  Bought a package with two Stealthcams.  It came with batteries and memory cards for $139 shipped.  I use my phone as a card reader, so I can check, save, and delete pics out in the brush.  I don't know if they are good or bad as far as game cameras go, but we had around 1400 pics to go through over a two week soak in Idaho last year.

Dicks sporting goods will have the primos work horse they will have rebates and be on sale for $30 each after rebates usually a $99 camera. They are my favorite newer cheap camera plus you can pick up a python lock for it it straps through the front of the camera for the honest theft and bears it helps. Otherwise there is the p12-14 two pack of stealth cams usually through north 40 or costal farm stores  that aren’t bad either.

@gocougs  How long have you been running the Primos cameras and how are they holding up?

I bought three of Primos Truth Cams a couple years ago.  2 out of 3 were dead in under six months.  That was in the spring going into summer.  The other one is still operating but has a strange halo line on night videos.  My cameras hang on a tree year around on the wet side.

Dicks in Southcenter had about 10 cuddebacks for 49$ and a few wildgame innovations for 39$ a week ago or so

I just use the Tasco trail cams. Usually run bout $30 .  Never had a problem with any of the models for the past 4 years. Have even left them out all winter long and we're still takin pics up until June last summer. They were set in July the year before. Couldn't believe it. There new model is way nice for the price. I own 20 or so now. Wldnt buy any others
