Shoot or No Shot 2018, Episode #3
« on: February 15, 2018, 01:31:48 PM »
Location: Somewhere in the elk woods
Hunt Pressure Status: Minimal in the area you’re hunting.
Hunt: Partner hunt (although your buddy is only calling today/not packing a bow)
Date: Second week of Elktember
Time: 5:00 PM
Tag: Archery; bull only.

As you and your buddy were almost to target spot for the evening hunt (a bench/bedding area you know about), and just as you reach the edge of this opening, your buddy motions that “elk are coming”!  Seems like you’re timing isn’t half bad and a small herd of 5-6 cows and a dandy bull are leaving the bedding area early today and heading out to dinner.  Your partner motions to a spot for you to set up and after backing up a bit himself, drops to his knees to see what happens and is ready to call if needed.  The old lead cow is moving pretty steady at a “move along, we’ve got places to go” pace, walking through the small opening (right to left as you’re facing) with the other ladies in tow.  Bullwinkle gives a roar that shakes the trees and you see his antlers now showing above the vegetation as he follows the gals.   As he clears the brush, you come to full draw and a split second later, your buddy gives a whiny cow mew/contact buzz which stops the beast in his tracks, where you see him now.  This party isn’t lasting long as you know what the wind is doing.  You are 35ish yards away from the bull, and, that dead piss fir is hallway between you and the bull.
Thermals as shown (blue arrows). Shoot or no shot here?

If you're shooting, save the picture to your desktop and open in MS Paint, then place a spot, X, or whatever on the critter before you save it back to a jpg or png and add the marked up pic with your post.

Trajectory of my arrow takes it over the stick with a couple inches of clearance.

:yeah: Agree with Stein, that bull would not go far with that shot placement with a rifle, and has little chance of having the branch be a problem. Not sure if i had a bow...probably try to put the arrow behind the shoulder in the lungs

The anatomy shows that the tibia and fibula end very low, under a third of the way up from the bottom of the torso. A third of the way up is the heart and above that, the lungs. Shooting directly over the front leg in the lower half is a very damaging shot and avoids major bone structure.
