Any feed back on leupold vx-3i lrp 8.5-25x50mm?
« on: February 15, 2018, 11:29:43 PM »
I'm looking for a new scope for long range target shooting and hunting. I have a vortex viper pst and I'm not overly impressed with the quality of the glass. I'm curious if the glass on these are better than the vortex viper pst. I'm also open to other ideas as far as scopes. I'm open to anything from 4-30 power.

How far do you plan to shoot and what reticle are you looking at?

8.5 is a lot for starting point.   Even my 42 power leupy only starts at 7. Definitely varmit only not woods gun.

I was looking at the TMOA reticle. I've also been  thinking about a Sightron SIII 6-24x50mm. I have a sightron stac 4-20x50mm, and for the money I think it's really good glass. Image is much sharper than any of my vortex pst or hslr.  Im open to checking out pretty much anything if you guys have any suggestions.

Be interesting to see pricing for Leupolds new VX5HD 5-25X56 scope they introduced at the SHOT show.  I that was around $1000 that would be nice.  The VX6- HD is pricy at $1500+ street price.

Hmmm that could be a good option to look at.
Thanks for the info.

I'm a big fan of the Sightron S III line, but I've been eyeballing one of the VX-5HDs lately.

I’ve been seeing a lot of talk lately about the newer Leupolds (in general) not tracking very well out of the box. Where does the Nightforce SHV fall in place with the other scopes mentioned here? Thinking the 5-20x56 with zero set turrets.

Yorke, which sightron s3 do you have. As I said before, I have an stac and am very impressed for the money.

I've had 2 of the SIII LR models, one 6-24x50 (which I sold with a rifle) and I still have an 8-32x56 both with the MOA-2 reticle. I also have a 3.5-10x44 with the same reticle which gets shuffled from gun to gun. I'm very happy with  all of them.

I think where Sightron comes up short is in the reticle department. I like the MOA-2 reticle but I would like a similar reticle in MIL with matching turrets. I'd also say that they're better targets scopes than "tactical" scopes that you're going to beat up and abuse.

If you can find a good deal on a used NF SHV or NXS then I say go for it. I'm not convinced that the SHV is that great for the price. The 3 I've used were optically on par with a Vortex PST with usable glass but really bad edge clarity. The NXS is a good scope if you can find a deal on a used one for around $1200, but they're big and heavy if that's a concern.

I don't know if my taste in scopes is all that good though, I still like my  Mk4 ERT 8.5-25 TMR with the M5 turrets and even I'll admit that it's not that good of a scope. :chuckle:

Thanks for the thoughts on the SHV. Was wondering where the sacrifice was (figured there had to be one for a NF to have an MSRP of $1200ish, and being able to get them for under $1k).

Like those turrets though!

As of right now I'm thinking about getting a Sightron siii 6-24x 50mm with a wide duplex reticle.

Hahaha! Less than 1% of the people here will ever beat up a scope. Then when it comes to the majority that served a small percentile even saw a scope with turrets in someone else's hands let alone theirs. Due to the fact that  if it didn't move they were painting it and if it did move they had to salute it.  :chuckle: But they feel the need to put a nightforce on a mountain rifle because it's cool (Even though it weighs more than the rifle) and in case they want to play super high speed operator dude, they can rig a glad bag as a chute and jump off their parents roof and the scope will survive the jump but the rifle and  they won't.
