« on: February 17, 2018, 10:10:40 AM »
Looking to hung Idaho 4 and 4a this fall for bear.  can't afford a guide so trying to do ourselves.  looking for areas within an hour of Post Falls.  Not honey holes but where would one start.  Have been pouring over maps and when work allows will start driving over to scout out. thanks in advance.

It's not worth the drive if you are spotting and stalking.  It's thick.  You will be better off running dogs or using bait in that unit.

Agree with this and lots of people running dogs.  Bait is an option but tough getting into the units some years due to snow pack.  If you picked these units due to discount tags it may be worth extra cash to hunt some of other units that are better for spot and stalk.

Head up trail 21. Back in about two miles there’s a big open hill side. Sit there till you see a bear

Go through the town of Pinehurst and head straight south as if your on a straight line to Calder.  You will climb up into the hills and I have got into a great many bear in the area.  I've come across many bait stations as well.  Real good bear population.

Buy a wolf tag too. That area is full of wolves too... Lots of open areas north of Wallace.
I couldn't care less about what anybody says..............

if you run a bait there(especially 4)3333 you have a real good chance of some hounds running bears off your bait. Not necessarily intentionally but if you are anywhere close to a road any decent dogs will strike and the race is on! You will run into a lot less houndoggers in units with less roads. Some parts of 4A are somewhat roadless and not very hound freindly

thanks for all the good info now to pour over maps.. we decided to pull the dates when no hound hunting allowed so "should" help with them not running bears off bait.

Go the middle of May, and simply find gated roads to walk.  If you don't score in the spring you can still go this fall.  Spring hunting is four times better by far.  If you do go in the fall, find some high basins with good huckleberries right under timber line.
