CWD planning
« on: March 08, 2018, 10:40:12 AM »
Now that Montana is a CWD state, as well as many others, how are you going to bring your antlers home?
The meat is the easy part, boned out and into coolers, the head, if you wish to bring home, not so much.
What are you planning to do?

"Antlers don't taste good, leaving them in the field."
"I hunt for meat only, no trophy hunter here."
Just getting those stupid reponses out of the way.
"If you have to be crazy to hunt ducks, I do not wish to be sane."

I ran into this with my Illinois deer hunt last year.  Easy way is to cap it like you would for a wood plaque mount, clean it and boil it and clean it some more.  As long as soft tissue is removed you can bring it back.  Its also ready to mount in a form if you do it right.  Another option is to either buy a tanned hide here or have someone tan it there.  Final option is have taxidermist there and ship/pickup final mount.

If planning a Euro mount I think it needs to be free of all brain matter, eyes and such  :dunno: boil it out I guess, or make arrangements for a local Taxi to do it and ship it home to you? I guess I better plan this myself  :yike:

Plus proof of sex has to be attached with it unless the meat has been processed I do believe.

Proof of sex should stay with the meat, or in accordance with state law.  As a side note this is a good topic for something like 21 states and areas of Canada.

For Montana I believe if the meat has been processed at a plant then all you need is the tag with the cut and wrapped meat. It was so warm one year over there we had to have the animals cut and wrapped, too warm to hang outside.

I think if your planning a euro mount just get the brain, eyes, and as much meat as you can off and you’ll be fine.

I'll just give it to my Euro mount taxidermist over there and he can do what he needs to do.

You going over the same dates as last year?   :chuckle:

Business opportunity for a mobile beetle cleaning operation in an enclosed trailer - post up a few units around the state and clean up - literally

Cool, hopefully all goes well and I'll have two more for you this season as well.

I go with old school mounts, not Euro, so I have always just cut the skull cap off.  It makes for less bulk to transport home and I don't have to worry about it for weeks or months if I don't get around to finishing it.

A Euro mount would be tricky for sure.  Fortunately for me, nobody is interested in a 1x2 Euro deer mount anyway.
