Thoughts on the 327 Federal
« on: March 19, 2018, 06:27:36 PM »
While out and about a couple weeks back, I picked up a Ruger GP100 in 327 Federal for a great price.

I haven't really figured out what the little 327 Federal is good for other than just being a fun little caliber. It comes up short of the 357 Mag in the energy department, but I have other guns if I need something with a little more oomph. It's not small enough to use as a carry gun, but it's a good size for packing around while I'm out in the woods.

I'm just curious if anybody else has one and what you'd use it for. Right now this gun is safe until my father in law gets a chance to shoot it. He's been all worked up on this chambering since it came out but he never picked one up. After that I haven't decided what to do with it. I wasn't that interested in the caliber when I bought it, I just wanted the GP100 to use as a donor gun for a new project. Gary Reeder will convert these little GP100s to 5 shot 44 or 41 mags or 41 and 356 GNR

Cool looking revolver.

Interesting caliber -  a real tweener.

Looks fun.

I picked up a Ruger SP101 in .327 Federal awhile back, just because it's different. Too busy with work, haven't had a chance to shoot it.

I think the .327 single six would be a nice outdoor carry gun

The chambering makes sense in a small frame gun like the SP101 or Single Six. I guess the good part about it in a GP100 is that it's a 7 shot.

What is the cost to convert to .44?  Any idea what the finished weight ends up?

It's about $2K, 5 times what I paid for the gun :chuckle:

The weight would depend on the barrel length you pick. I imagine it would be right there with S&W model 69 44 mag if you went with a 4" barrel.

Had a gun in that caliber for a short time. Always thought it would be great for cats put up a tree, but, well, this is Washington. Better rounds available for self defense imo..

I'm almost ashamed to admit that the little thing has grown on me. :chuckle:

Like a fool I picked up a box of 85gr American Eagle and 100gr American Eagle loads for it to try. Accuracy is pretty mediocre but about what I'd expect from American Eagle ammo. I'm resisting the urge to buy a set of dies and starting loading for it. I already swapped out the white insert in the front site for a green fiber optic tube that I had sitting around and I took it apart an polished up the important parts inside. I found a Simply Rugged Sourdough Pancake holster in my holster drawer which fits the gun perfect too. When I carry it on my left hip as a cross draw holster the gun is out of the way and easy to get to.

Now I'm starting to question whether or not I want to send it in to get chopped up. :bash: I do love the 41 mag though....
